Am enjoying being here | There are ALWAYS things going on in the Tiger Den or on the track field. It's easy to get yourself in a game of ultimate frisbee or kickball. The SAC also does a great job getting fun events a few times a month. |
Bang for the buck | I have my entire tuition, room, meal plan, and books paid for with scholarships. |
Tips for prospective students | The university offers TONS of scholarships, so make good friends with the workers in the scholarship office. They are great at making sure deadlines don't creep up on you out of nowhere. |
Great for these types of students | Even if you hate the city, you will love the campus. Around 20,000 students attend the U of M, but it's easy to feel like you belong. |

Am learning a lot | Be sure that even the basic classes you choose your first year are gearing you toward one of your many major choices, if you haven't already chosen a major.....trust me you will certainly change your mind more than once. |
Am enjoying being here | It's great going here, but just like high school, some professors are boring while others will have you leaving their class in amazement, but regardless of whether you have fun in every class, you main goal is to stay focus and learn and make the best of what you have. |
Bang for the buck | The great thing about this school is you have the opportunity to drop classes if you feel uneasy, whether you really feel the class is not for you or whether you will fail the first test, you have the opportunity to redeem yourself before the deadline or just before its too late. there's also a wide range of food choices, so you'll never go hungry. Full-time (12+ hrs) freshmen and sophomores will have a chance to get a meal plan, and a 300 debit balance. You can find more information about dining dollars at the University of Memphis website which is www.memphis.edu. |
Tips for prospective students | 1.STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!!! 2.Get enough sleep for class 3.Have a light snack or eat breakfast 4.Try to workout whenever possible-we have a free recreational facility for students to partake in a variety of exercises and sports---It's FREE with school ID- don't gain the FRESHMAN 15 5.Get a study group started or join one, every bit of studying will help with even the hardest class 6.keep a steady schedule so that you can still schedule other things you would like to do like spending time with family and friends or enjoying you favorite hobby. 7.if you work or would like to work make sure it does not interfere with school. I learned that the hard way but I fixed the mistake before it was too later 8. Take every scholarship opportunity available. College isn't cheap, and take it from me, you will not want to continue paying for school well after you graduate, many, many, many years late |
Great for these types of students | Every student that's looking for a great school |

Am learning a lot | Professors are very friendly, easy to talk to, and almost always available for extra-help. |
Am enjoying being here | I thought I would hate it here, but I actually love it here. |
Bang for the buck | Out of state graduate... not eligible for the HOPE scholarship, so I'm paying out of pocket. |
Great for these types of students | Everyone; local and non-local. |

Am learning a lot | Believe it or not, my classes taught by graduate assistants are my favorites! All of my professors truly care about their students, and they have been very forgiving of first semester freshmen! Although I haven't taken any upper level courses yet, I am actually excited about moving forward because the professors here really want you to learn. |
Am enjoying being here | Unless you're Greek or an Emerging Leader, many people who are overly involved on campus will probably shun you. But... what I've learned is to find a group of people that get you, and to not care about what anyone else thinks! There are many different organizations on campus, and tons of exciting events, so make the most of it and keep your head held high. |
Bang for the buck | Wow! Scholarships here are amazing, and academic scholarships begin with a 26 ACT. TN residents with a 21 automatically get $4000 a year from HOPE, so if you excelled in high school and have high grades and a lengthy resume, everything will be covered. You might even get PAID to attend! The resources on this campus are all free and range from psychological counseling to interview preparations. We have a great newspaper, and the University sponsors many free events as well. And... our new University Center offers inexpensive, great food! |
Tips for prospective students | Memphis offers many academic and merit scholarships, so do your research and apply early. Once accepted, use Facebook to connect with your future classmates. It really helps to know other students beforehand! Don't think that you have to become involved in everything. It's good to meet people and do something useful, but remember why you're here: to learn. Don't forget who you are and what makes you unique- and find people who accept that, instead of trying to change you. |
Great for these types of students | Democratic (professors are very liberal) Religious (many amazing organizations) Overachievers (there are many ways to shine here!) Underachievers (it's easy to slip out after classes without feeling the need to get involved) Those who wish to impact their campus and community Volunteers (St. Jude's Up 'til Dawn was founded here, and it's an amazing way to help children in need!) Those who are sick of cafeteria food (teehee) TN students with midline ACT scores and little to spend on college |

In three sentences | the university of memphis has a surprisingly diverse faculty and student body for a southern school. there are loads of student help and services available here as well. it's best feature by far is frosh camp, a camp for incoming freshmen to learn about the u of m, make friends, and ask the questions those outside of the university may not have answers to. |
Tips for prospective students | for anyone attending this university, my number one piece of advice would have to be don't be afraid to ask! there is literally a department of service for everything, spanning from academic help to being a first generation student to needing health advice. as a secondary tip, steer clear of the uc (university center) until it's time to socialize! the uc is the center of activity on campus and it is quite easy to get distracted from school work if you are anywhere inside of the building other than the technology hub, a computer lab on the second floor. |
Academic Rigor | i wish there was a way to choose 3.5 for academic rigor. the difficulty of your courses is what you make it. if you plan on being the bum in the back of the classroom that dozes off every ten minutes, is late to lecture, or doesn't do the assignments, then yeah, it will be tough. your professors are more than likely aware of your behavior, bad and good, and both have its payoffs. a positive attitude goes a long way also. when in the math department, an academic tutor is advised. many students complain about the instructors being foreign and difficult to understand. i had that issue both semesters my freshman year. |
Dorm Life | overall, dorm life on this campus is actually pretty cool. there would be only one building people would complain about and that would be rt. i refrained from using the full name to keep from fanning the flames of bad reputation. if someone does end up attending u of m, just ask about rt and anyone will tell you just say no. with that being said, i actually lived in that dorm freshman year and had no problems with it, mostly because i lived on the honors floor and it remained pretty quiet. rt is the most social dorm of them all, recommended for freshmen, maybe sophomores. the remaining housing areas would be best for upperclassmen trying to get in a good nights studying or sleep. we have round the clock security and desk assistance, so its pretty helpful and they have quick responses to problems that may arise. |
Food and Dining | the five star rating isn't necessarily for taste, but for choice and variety. we have many different restaurants on campus in multiple locations across campus. there is even a little shop in the library! if you are a vegetarian or vegan, they have meals for that, if you are a carnivore, there are several places to eat, and if you are a sweets fanatic, look out, because you'll end up gaining the freshman 15 in about a week and a half. as far as known food chains go, we have burger king, taco bell, chick-fil-a, subway, and dunkin doughnuts. |
What to do for fun | there is always a team to support and a game to go to, we have a recreation center complete with an exercise/weight room, two olympic sized pools, racquet ball courts, several basketball courts and more, the university center, also called the uc, has a food court, a restaurant with pools tables, and a movie theater, and we have an organization called the student activities council, or sac, that always hosts different events for almost every day of the week for students to participate in. best of all, there is usually free food involved. |
Bang for the buck | to be honest, we have a rather reasonable tuition here compared to most places that offer maybe half of what the university of memphis offers. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | we don't really have any traditions other than the fight song we sing at games, which may be an aspect of most universities. an odd location on campus would be mcwhether library, which is no longer a library, but is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl who was murdered by a janitor in there. we also have a dorm, myders, that is said to be haunted by the daughter of the first president of the university of memphis. he had it built in the shape of an e, as her name was elizabeth. |
Great for these types of students | this university is great for individuals looking to major in education, sports management, engineering, and foreign language, as those departments are really strong and have a lot to offer. this university is also good for students who like a lot of extra help and available information for any and everything involving school and beyond. |
Clubs and Activities | u of m has a wonderful selection of clubs and activities. multicultural, nerds/fandom, anime, naacp, you name it, we have it. and if somehow someone wants to join a specific type of club and it isn't offered here, they could easily create one so long as there are seven members and a code of conduct. |
Greek Life | greeks are heavily involved on campus and in the community. they help with move-ins, tutoring, events, and most anything else you can think of. they definitely keep down the stereotypes around here. my favorite is the yard shows they put on, where they step for everyone while representing their fraternity or sorority. |
Campus Safety | very safe! despite the bad rep memphis gets as a city, the university of memphis is a safe environment. there are officers patrolling at all hours, various emergency towers constructed all across campus, we have dark hour escorts, and emergency tiger text, which is an alert sent to the cell phones of students to keep them updated on suspicious activity. i'm never afraid to leave my dorm at night. |

Am enjoying being here | The people here are willing to take their time out and help you: well most of them anyways. |
Bang for the buck | All I can say is that it is worth it. |
Tips for prospective students | Make sure you study and mange your time wisely |

Am learning a lot | If you put the effort forth to get something out of the class you will, however it is pretty easy to coast through some courses. Most of my experience is with the journalism department and I've noticed that more and more the it is focusing its curriculum on hands on experience. With the independent student newspaper, The Daily Helmsman, at any student's fingertips, there is no reason to not have honed your journalistic skill before graduating. |
Am enjoying being here | The University of Memphis is an extremely active, lively campus. With over 100 student organizations to join concentrated on a variety of interest, there's literally a place for everyone. About 25,000 students attend The U of M, with 90 percent being commuter students. Still, it seems that lots live close by and hang out on campus. Daily there are events for students to attend with a lest kept in the newly constructed University Center and on a online calendar. The Daily Helmsman keeps you up-to-date on campus news and does a great job at incorporating your opinions and what you want to read. |
Bang for the buck | The college is relatively inexpensive with low student fees. The student fees are always put to use, with daily activities on campus, many of which bring in celebrities, bands and other events of interest to students. A plethora of scholarships are also available from The University itself and private donors. |
Tips for prospective students | Buy your textbooks at Textbook Brokers off Walker Avenue. A study done by The Daily Helmsman (dailyhelmsman.com) shows they are the cheapest by far. Be weary of parking in the limited space in front of R.P. Tracks. The area has been known to see countless hit and runs of parked vehicles. Speaking of parking, if you can afford it buy a priority permit, as the lots fill up quickly and everyone's experienced being late to class due to not being able to find a parking spot. If you don't buy a pass to park in the privileged lots or garages, park off Southern, it's less packed than the Central lot. Most of all, JOIN an organization. I promise there is one that is right up your alley. |
Great for these types of students | I'm not being cliche when I say everyone has a spot at The U of M. With a major in most areas, and ways to get involved with any interest, this lively campus offers a lot to a lot of different types of students. The honors program is involved and there are great free tutoring programs for those interested and athletes. The University of Memphis is great! GO TIGERS! |

Did learn a lot | Depending on the subject, I learned alot of things there and it prepared me pretty well for life after school. |
Did enjoy being here | It wasn't too bad, had alot of fun there and there is definately a group for almost every interest. |
Bang for the buck | My GI Bill was able to fund my education without much difficulty and am considering graduate school there right now. |
Tips for prospective students | * Realize that most of the professors are very liberal and will attempt to convert you to their way of thinking. Its one thing if its a Pol Sci course, its something completely different when its a Foreign Language, English or Math class. * Take advantage of the tutoring services available to you. * Accept the fact there is student racism on campus because of where U of M is located and that there are normally two of each social club-one for African Americans and one for everyone else. * Treat your studies as a job, dedicate yourself to your school work and balance your time wisely. |
Great for these types of students | Non-traditional students Military veterans Traditional students |

Am learning a lot | This is my first semester at the University of Memphis, and the amount of information bestowed upon me is amazing. The professors are very informative, and show great concern in their students education. Have a problem learning the material in class? No problem the campus provides free tutoring. Councelors are also always there to help with any issue on campus. |
Am enjoying being here | There are a great amount of student organizations. The mass amount of organizations gives students a greater chance of finding an organization that fits their interests. Most of the organizations completly organized by students; Giving students a chance to be a leader. There is plenty of diversity on the campus. The diversity opens everyones eyes to different things the world has to offer; Therefore broadening the minds of the students on campus. There are a lot more extracurricular activities on campus than there are in highschool. The campus is an all around adventure, because there is so much it has to offer. |
Bang for the buck | I'm very satisfied with the housing, classes, and meal plans at the University. The resources on campus are amazing and free! There is also the free gym, computer labs, study spaces, access into all University of Memphis games. The Uof M definitely gives students bang for there buck. |
Tips for prospective students | Any students who want to attend the University should make sure that they talk to their councelor if they have any questions. Although the University of Memphis staff will inform you with as much information as they can give you there will always be questions. Don't be afraid to ask. It's better a student ask than possibly put a hold on their future. |
Great for these types of students | Students that want to be involved, focus on their studies, and become a future leader should definately attend the University of Memphis. |

In three sentences | From the college application to gaining enrollment, the recruiters for this university are extremely helpful and always willing to give guidance. The campus itself is phenomenal with many classes are within a 15 minute walking distance. Most importantly, the overall atmosphere of both the college and the people who go there is warm and inviting-I always feel welcome when I am on campus. |
Tips for prospective students | Even if this University is not your first choice, make it at least your 'plan Z,' because it is a 4-year university that rivals many of the more highly recognized universities in both it's classes and campus. When applying for this college or any college, make sure to ask the recruitment office questions to things you do not quite understand-it's their job to help you. When gained acceptance into this college, make an effort to check your assigned email frequently. Also, when gained acceptance, make an effort to apply for the Scholarship Manager, and check it frequently. Make an effort to sign up for New Student Orientation (NSO), and, if able, sign up for the earliest session available, because it will allow you to choose later times for classes. If able, I greatly stress signing up for Frosh Camp, because it will greatly help you better understand info that you were introduced to in NSO and is truly a life-changing experience. |
Academic Rigor | I cannot stress enough the importance of attending all of your classes. Only meeting 1-3 times a week, each time you meet your teacher will teach through 1-3 chapters. Yet, as a whole, the classes are manageable-they can be challenging but will not destroy your brain. Most classes will require that you study outside of class and that you invest in both group study sessions and tutoring. Luckily, the university offers free tutoring to all students in every subject. |
Dorm Life | Dorm life grants you an opportunity to meet and get to know people you may had never before considered people who you would normally hang out with. Living on-campus, you may or may not know who your roommate will be. In fact, living next door may be a future classmate, a future study partner, a future tutor, a future mentor, a future life-long friend. Living on-campus symbolizes a main purpose of college, which is to meet new people. The dorms themselves vary by the many Residence Halls that reside on the campus. However, each and every dorm has access to clean and healthy bathroom, WIFI, and areas that operate as tutoring sessions. With all classes on campus only 15 minutes apart, living on-campus allows you to both miss out on the headache of rushing to class warrants and the luxury of sleeping in late. |
Food and Dining | Anywhere on campus, getting a bite to eat is within a short walking distance, and with classes only 15 min apart this can be a great help. In the University Center, the entire first floor has been devoted to food. There, the choices of dining range from fast food, with places such as Burger King, to coffee shops, with places such as Starbucks. Outside the University Center but still on-campus, many other restaurants can be found such as Einstein Bros., a noteworthy coffee shop and Subway. Also outside the Center, the Tiger Den resides where foods from many cultures are represented in an all-you-can-eat style of dining. |
What to do for fun | Whether a full-time student or a part-time student, many campus sponsored activities (that range from cultural festivals to dances) are available to you during the entire semester-as long as you have your Student ID. Provided by the campus, as a student, you are able to utilize â??Plug into the Blue.â?? A free service, it reminds you of any and all activities that will be held on-campus during an entire semester. It is easy to sign up for and can be found on such social networks as Facebook and Twitter. Home to the nationally renowned Memphis Tigers basketball team, the University of Memphis allows all of its students the opportunity to attend the games free of charge and also provides transportation to every game via the campusâ??s â??Blue Line.â?? This opportunity is also given at every athletic event sponsored by the University. Another perk of attending any athletic event as a student is that students can bring guests, who can get it at a discounted price. |
Bang for the buck | The University of Memphis is a 4-year university whose teachers, facilities, and educational programs rival those of widely acknowledged universities, such as Columbia University and Penn State. However, the University of Memphis is an inexpensive 4-year university. Students who reside in surrounding counties of the university are able to considered â??in-state,â?? which allows them to pay a cheaper tuition. As a student, $300 dining dollars are built into your tuition that can be used either to buy meals or even buy books at the campus bookstore. With no major roads running through the campus, the need to have a vehicle is little to none. In fact, the university sponsors a bus line called the â??Blue Lineâ?? that is available to all students free of charge-just have to have Student ID. The â??Blue Lineâ?? transports around campus, near local markets such as Kroger and Walmart, and even to athletic events. Most importantly, a â??Blue Lineâ?? bus is guaranteed to pass by designated pick up stations every 7 minutes. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | During New Student Orientation, you are given an â??UMemphis Bucket-list,â?? which entails 100 experiences that were voted on by former students that must be done before one graduates. High-fiving the Internment Dean and snagging a selfie with Tom III, an actual lion who is the universityâ??s mascot, are among some of the many experiences on the Bucket List. Also, snagging a selfie with the Tiger Statues around the campus is urged. |
Great for these types of students | For students who believe they might find difficulty in transitioning from high school to college, this University offers the class â??ACAD 1100.â?? Taught by an admissions advisor, this class focuses on topics such as time-management and helpful study habits that have been proven to aid students transitioning from high school into college. For students who are coming into this University without a vehicle, the University offers a free means of transportation known as â??the Blue Line.â?? A bus line that travels around most of both the campus and city. For students who are normally stressed, the Counseling Center sponsors a fully interactive relaxation zone called the â??Relaxation Zone.â?? Comfy lounge chairs, couches, massage chairs and bean bags habitat the area. There, free massages are available along with a fully functioning sauna. |
Clubs and Activities | With 200+ organizations home to this university, students are guaranteed to find something that interests them. Cultural clubs, environmental clubs, and clubs that focus on volunteering are among some of the many clubs offered. |
Campus Safety | This university is infatuated with safety. Its campus police are sanctioned by the actual Memphis PD and are able to make actual arrest both on and off campus. Available 24 hours a day/7 days a week, the campus PD are constantly roaming the campus. The university itself has established campus PD alert stations around the campus, which are thick poles that are activated by visible buttons whose purpose is to wail until a campus PD officer arrives. |
