Am enjoying being here | At MSOE, students are able to meet other people from all over the world. The study abroad program brings in students from the Czech Republic, Germany, and India. There is always something to do at MSOE. The school lets students create and run organizations or clubs, so there is something for everyone to do. While there are many academic related organizations at MSOE, there are also others which deal with community service, intramural sports, anime, gaming, music, and much more. When living in the City of Milwaukee, there is always something to do. Students can take a walk down to the lake, Ice skate at all times of the year at MSOE’s Kern Center, explore the city’s shops, paintball, go to the movie theatre, etc. The possibilities are endless. |
Bang for the buck | MSOE has everything to offer for students. MSOE offers a general scholarship to almost every student that plans on attending the school, ranging up to $12,000 a year. If students still need financial aid, there are many more scholarship opportunities and other forms of financial aid to every student. Students who attend MSOE obtain a top notch education while experiencing some of the best years of their lives. MSOE’s small class sizes help students learn better than in large halls. The students experience more lab time than many of the other top universities. MSOE offers a guarantee for on track students to graduate on time and have every class available when need. Apart from the excellent education, the students can get involved with activities and many student organizations. |
Tips for prospective students | If you are planning on attending MSOE, be prepared for working hard on homework and studying. Also, you should plan on having fun at your 4 or 5 years at MSOE. (MSOE offers 5 year dual degree program). |
Great for these types of students | Generally, If you like math and science, there is a good chance you would like MSOE. Although Engineering is in its name, MSOE also offers nursing, business, and more for students who do not want to major in engineering. |

Am learning a lot | MSOE is a tough school, there is no doubt there. Although the teachers are enjoyable, they are very rigorous and know their stuff. Occasionally you run into a teacher that hasn't been around as long and you will end up teaching yourself as much as you learn from the teacher. In general, the rigor of the classes allows for vast understanding and understanding of how to apply what you learn. |
Am enjoying being here | I really do enjoy the classes. The teachers are great for the most part, and the rigor keeps you challenged at every turn of every quarter of class. Sometimes, school keeps you so busy you cannot have an outside life like a job which can be a problem for some. Also, MSOE is not much for partying. The male to female ratio holds steady around 4 to 1. |
Bang for the buck | This school is not a cheap one. Although they aren't, they offer a great academic scholarship to almost every student. They invest a lot into the school between high quality teachers and lab equipment. They also provide state-of-the-art laptops to every student that are renewed every 2 years (that you get to keep when you graduate). This is great so no one is at a disadvantage when it comes to the computer they can afford. |
Tips for prospective students | If you are looking for a challenge, this is the place for you. Don't come here expecting parties every night or to find your next girlfriend. This school is very down to earth when it comes to their curriculum but keep students busy their entire scholarly career. |
Great for these types of students | If you like math and science in a smaller college atmosphere, this is the place for you. It is a great school and they will do anything and everything they can to get you a job. Just be ready to work long and hard for the years you are here. |

In three sentences | The education is challenging, but the classes help with resume building experience. Being on campus helps me realize the stresses of living on your own. The campus is very accommodating for the events that are created and the location of where the campus is located on in Milwaukee with events in Milwaukee. |
Tips for prospective students | Manage your time well and make sure you study enough to know the material. |
Academic Rigor | Their academics can be challenging to anybody who doesn't know the proper studying technique. Don't study with distraction and take notes in class. |
Dorm Life | Dorm life is fun, but it can be hard because you are away from your family. |
Food and Dining | The cafeteria has all you can eat selections. |
What to do for fun | There's a game room on the campus and fraternity parties are available. |
Bang for the buck | Rent as many books as you can. |

Am learning a lot | While I took some basic engineering classes in High school, I'm only finished with my first year and my brain wants to burst. Don't be afraid to talk to your teachers, they are very willing to help you understand. |
Am enjoying being here | I live in the dorms, which, for me, is amazing. At home, things are horribly stressful. This way, my parents really miss me when I come home, and things are a lot calmer. There's so much to do on campus, and without spending any money either! |
Bang for the buck | For this, all I have to say is Oh my god. The laptops and tech support are well worth the technology fee. All throughout the year, they have free stuff going on, and not to mention the things that the school pays for when your in a sorority/fraternity (It encourages bonding.). |
Tips for prospective students | Study and do home work for at least two hours for every hour you spend in class. I know that sounds like a lot, but you need to, in order to keep up. Don't be afraid to join an org, it's amazing fun. Trust me, I would laugh if someone told me in high school that I was gonna join a sorority. |
Great for these types of students | If you're a gamer, and you know your memes... you'll fit in very well. To me, it seems as if MSOE is filled with quirky students. We're all a little weird. It's not as jock crazy as UWM is, and I love that. Although, we have a VERY popular hockey team. |

Am learning a lot | Being a MSOE freshman, I am able to see how the school is already providing me with skills for life outside of college. MSOE makes you get involved with your major, putting you in an environment with fellow students who also strive to succeed in the engineering world. Hands on learning is great for basic skills preparing you to be affective when entering a career straight out of college. |
Am enjoying being here | The school, classes, students, and faculty are great. It is apparent the professors want you to succeed by making the classes difficult so that you may better understand why you need the course in your curriculum for your major. The professors interact with the students to insure their time at MSOE is not a waste. The school teaches you the skills you will need to better compete against other future employees in the career of your choice. |
Bang for the buck | Though an expensive school, every moment your in class is worth more than the tuition. The school provides each and every student with a computer to use throughout their schooling at MSOE; a definite help. There are many opportunities for students to get free stuff such as tickets for upcoming events, and even merchandise. |
Tips for prospective students | Be ready for a very fast, hard, beneficial education. Make sure you plan your future according to your class schedules, because if you fall behind in school it will be difficult to catch up. |
Great for these types of students | MSOE is perfect for students looking for a great education with surrounding friendly attitudes which guide you to succeed in life. It is also for students who are looking to complete a challenge. |

Am learning a lot | You will learn SO much here. You jump right in to major-specific courses and labs your first term, which is definitely an advantage MSOE has over other engineering and tech schools. The professors are great and the class sizes are small, so you get a lot of personal instruction. |
Am enjoying being here | I absolutely love MSOE. I joined the rowing team, and it's a lot of fun. It's really easy to get involved here, and Milwaukee is a great town. |
Bang for the buck | As far as colleges go, MSOE is pretty expensive. However, the Financial Aid department is usually able to give you what you need, and the acceptance scholarships are great! |
Tips for prospective students | MSOE is tough. A lot of time and hard work is essential to getting your degree here, so be prepared to work! |
Great for these types of students | MSOE is perfect for students who want a city feel without having to live in a huge metropolis. The school itself is really small, but both outgoing and shy students feel very comfortable with the class sizes and student population. |

In three sentences | It is not as difficult as I expected, but I hear it gets tougher after freshman year. Unlike the myth that says attendance doesn't matter, it does; some teachers make attendance/participation a part of the grade. While the courses can be rigorous, it's easy to find friends and have a good time. |
Tips for prospective students | Leave your dorm room during welcome week. What you do during welcome week can make or break your experience. If I hadn't stepped out of my comfort zone and introduced myself to so many people, my life now would be so dull. Make friends. Branch out. You will not regret it. |
Academic Rigor | The grading scale is very intimidating. Also, unlike Ivy schools who curve and make everyone's GPA's higher than they should be, MSOE has only had about 14 alums graduate with 4.0s since it was established. It takes a lot of hard work, but the 94% job placement rate means future employers know graduates are cream of the crop. |
Dorm Life | Best part of college. I love having friends just a few doors down from me. While it takes some getting used to and a lot of prioritizing, friends make the college experience. |
Food and Dining | Cafeteria food isn't the best. Roscoe's is good for awhile, but gets tiring eventually. Skylight food is delicious, but limited options. Ramen tastes pretty good, though. It actually tastes better in college than ever before, especially after experiencing caf food. Also, Panera, Noodles, Qdoba, and Buffalo Wild Wings are within walking distance. A grocery store is a block away as well. |
What to do for fun | Walk around and experience the city! The lake is close by so it's nice when the weather is sunny and warm. Hang out with friends and just live it up :) |
Greek Life | The greek orgs are very different from stereotypical frats and sororities. They do drink, but definitely not as much as TV portrays them out to be. They do actually care about their members' education and helping them succeed into becoming well-rounded people. |

In three sentences | The classes proceed through assigned material at a steady and comfortable pace and teachers are demanding yet accomodating. The majority of the students are intrinsically motivated for success as well, reinforcing much of what is learned outside of class. The Mikwaukee School of Engineering is a challenging but rewarding experience, in all respects. |
Tips for prospective students | Studying is an essential tool for academic success, no matter your previous high school background. Make good choices in friends and use your friends to help review materials if you have the same instructor. |
Academic Rigor | Very few class days feel drawn-out or useless, so every class is important in understanding the concepts that follow after. That being said, a missed day is truly impairing in the long run. Academic integrity and discipline is important for success at MSOE. The classes are small enough that professors will notice a student's absence, and they take note of those students as well. The teachers are easy to contact, however, and a simple email can inform the professor of a student's predicament if they overslept or cannot make it to class. The instructors are more tahn willing to respond to the email with all the relevant lesson material and inform the student of the content of a lecture. |
Dorm Life | Education is important, but dorm life provides an invaluable opportunity to meet new people. Too many students hide in their rooms, only going out to attend their classes or our to eat. In MSOE they set aside an entire week after moving in to socialize and meet new people through activities set by our Residential Advisors, Academic Advisors, and Fraternities to end the summer with a bang. I've met more people that I respect and admire in MSOE than I ever knew in high school! |
Food and Dining | The food is quite varied from day to day and it is almost always satisfactory. It's provided very cheaply, 3$ per meal, in buffet style dining so students can eat to their content. They offer fruits, salad, and veggies every meal. As far as nutrition goes, they give students every opportunity to maintain a healthy diet. For those who are looking for a little more flavor, several restaurants nearby are available to cater to the hungry college student, sometimes with discounted prices too. |
What to do for fun | I go on walks frequently around town to get to know the area. The lakefront is simply breathtaking and the musuem is quite a sight to see. There is almost always a group or greek event going on during the week, often without chargning admission and at the same time offering free food and drink. Who doesn't like free stuff? |
Bang for the buck | The initial price for the College is staggering to consider, but MSOE does everything in their power to ensure that the average person can attend. They offer a stupendous financial aid package of 12,000$ per year, amounting to almost half the average student's total tuition. They offer work to students in need of an income, and provide services of all types to ensure the experience is a good one. They provide every student with a computer and provide any and all tech support necessary for it's upkeep. They also hold group tutoring sessions and offer priate tutoring as well to any student, whether those students are currently earning B's or F's. For the serious student, they give us ervery opportunity possible to succeed. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | The Painted Rock is a rock painted weekly by the local Sororities and Fraternities. It's covered in decades of accumulated layers of paint, likely several inches thick. |
Great for these types of students | Students who have an aptitude for mathematics and chemistry and wish to exercise these aptitudes are encouraged to come to MSOE for Engineering. They also offer Nursing degrees for those interested in the Healthcare field and Business Degrees for the industrious. |
Clubs and Activities | They offer all sorts of sports including Frisbee, Hockey volleyball, soccer, basketball, and martial arts clubs for the athletically inclined. The Kern Center is not only the campus ice rink (Available for Free Skate nights weekly) but a gym, providing a track for running even through the winter and various types of exercise equipment. Aside from physical fitness, MSOE is stocked with clubs of all colors, including photography, theatre, robotics, and vehicle design. If the club doesn't exist yet, it can be created too! |
Campus Safety | The Campus itself is quiet. Campus security Officers patrol the area and check the I.D's of every student who enters. Even the city is mostly peaceful, but police sirens do go speeding down the road occasionally. I have no qualms about walking on campus anytime of day, but I wouldn't venture out into Milwaukee past 8 pm without a group of friends. |

In three sentences | MSOE is a top tier engineering school that will get you an excellent job after only 4 years of college. Some of the social aspects are lacking compared to some schools, but they still exist. It is a very small campus with even smaller class sizes. |
Tips for prospective students | MSOE's social atmosphere seems nonexistent if you don't look for things to do and people to hang out with. If you want to talk to people or do things, pay attention to your email, as many social events are posted through this medium. In addition, learn to be organized, setting aside times to study and do homework, as MSOE has a very tough course load. At the same time, don't expect to get a 4.0 throughout your time here, as only 7 people in school history have. |
Academic Rigor | MSOE is by far one of the most challenging schools out there. With many students dropping out or transferring by their sophomore year, it requires a great deal of effort from the students to stay on task in order to succeed. However, the teachers are usually quite fair about deadlines and have many office hours if you need additional help. |
Dorm Life | The dorms are not set up very well to provide much opportunity for social interaction, but laying out your room effectively can. There are no common rooms on the floors (which is why using your room effectively is important) so there isn't a good large place to meet with floor mates nearby. However, there is cleaning staff for the hallways and bathrooms, as well as a study floor in one of the buildings. It should also be noted that these areas can be found in many of the other campus building, all within a block from the residence halls. |
Food and Dining | A meal plan is required for students living in the residence halls. The food isn't great, but the cafeteria is all you can eat. In addition, there are two campus restaurants that use the meal plan which offer good food. You should plan on making your own meals in a microwave to have variety from the cafeteria food as well as bringing your own snacks. |
What to do for fun | The Kern Center is a state of the art athletic facility that is free for students and $5 for guests. In addition, many of the students have hobbies to fill their free time. Since campus is located in downtown Milwaukee, many great venues (museums, theaters, etc.) are just a short walk away. |
Bang for the buck | I would give MSOE a five star rating, since academically, the payoff (95% placement rate, average starting salary of $56,000 a year, in and out in 4 years) is worth the tuition, but the requirement to stay in the dorms with a meal plan when living off campus is much cheaper lowers the value greatly. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | The science building is a Frankenstein of architecture. Originally two separate buildings, the school decided to combine them in to one. However, the varying heights of ceilings and floors at different elevations along the slight incline of the block the building is on causes the building to resemble a maze of sorts, with the common joke being that after four years you'll still be lucky to find a classroom without getting lost once or twice. |
Great for these types of students | MSOE is good for students who can learn fundamentals and theory during lecture and put it into practice during labs. If you are interested in learning about your major from the start, this is a good place for you. It should also be noted that MSOE requires dedication and hard work towards academics not seen at most schools, so students need to be driven and organized to do well in classes. |
Clubs and Activities | There are many clubs and activities at MSOE. These include intramural sports, professional associations relating to the majors offered, international associations, and much more. |
Greek Life | I have not participated in Greek life, but there are several fraternities and sororities that maintain an active social atmosphere around campus with both each other and the general student population. |
Campus Safety | MSOE is located in one of the safest places in Milwaukee and has a full team of Public Safety officers. These officers perform such duties as monitoring the entrances of both dorms, patrolling campus in cars, and responding to emergencies. In addition, there are safety poles throughout campus (which is quite small) to aid Public Safety in its duties. |

Tips for prospective students | Make sure to apply for scholarships before arriving, the financial aid office will be able to help you with this |
Academic Rigor | This college is not intended for those who are not willing to work towards their goal. The phrase, "You reap what you sow" really does apply here. Most of the professors will help you achieve your goal, but to get above is 3.5 GPA is a true accomplishment here. The bright side is that after this, anything else in life will seem fairly easy. |
Dorm Life | If you plan on spending your free time on the computer playing video games or reading in your room, this college has the perfect dorms to live in. The floors are divided up by the social activity of the residents, so some floors will be more social than others. The dorm rooms themselves are fairly small, and the bathrooms are shared by the entire floor. Occasionally the elevators will break, which is a problem if you live above the 4th floor. Otherwise, living on a floor of engineers is beneficial, as anything that gets broken can probably be fixed by someone on your floor. |
Food and Dining | If you want a lot of sub-par food for one meal swipe, the cafeteria is a good place to go. The grill in the cafeteria does have its benefits, and the guy working there makes the burgers taste appetizing. If you want a small amount of good tasting food for one meal swipe, go to Skylight or Roscoe's. Those food places also take meal dollars and have pretty good food. The hours for Roscoe's constantly change, but can be really good when you're up late working on a paper. There's not a lot of cheap restaurants surrounding the campus, but there is a Panera Bread, Chipotle, Jimmy Johns, Zoup, and several other restaurants nearby. Also, Vagabond has 2 dollar taco Tuesdays and Thursdays |
What to do for fun | The hockey games during the winter quarter are really fun to go to. However, on most weekends there isn't a lot to do on campus unless an organization plans something. It helps if you play video games or watch Netflix in your free time, because when you do have free time, you'll probably be doing that. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | The organizations and Greek life on campus all paint this small rock on campus at any time during the year, and sometimes the rock will be painted 6 times in one day. Also, St. Patricks week is big around here, since he is the patron saint of engineers. The science building on campus is actually a fusion of two buildings, so it has become a monstrosity of architecture, with several staircases leading to nowhere. |
Great for these types of students | Perfect for people who are antisocial, not really looking to date, more focused on a future career instead of a fun college lifestyle. If this doesn't exactly fit you, you'll still survive, and probably find people like you. |
Clubs and Activities | There are tons of clubs around campus that host events for the students, and try to make life around here better and more fun. There is something for almost everyone, plus you can create your own organization if none of them fit you. |
Greek Life | Pretty good guys and girls, not like the stereotypical ones you see in the movies. |
Campus Safety | I feel completely safe walking by myself on campus at 3 in the morning. |
At MSOE, the time in the labs play a large role in getting the students involved with their major. The students who attend MSOE experience more than four times the amount of time spent in labs than students who attend other schools throughout the country. The academic track at MSOE has students taking core classes dealing with their major since the beginning of their freshman year.
If a student is having trouble with a class, the student will be able to get help from the free tutoring in the learning resource center or from talking directly to their professor in person, on the phone, or even by email. Everyone is willing to help. The professors actually care and want to help you pass the class.
