Colleges in Milwaukee

The fifth-largest city in the Midwest, Milwaukee in the state of Wisconsin is home to more than half a million people. The Gamma global city is known for its festivals, beer, watersports, and variety of ethnic food. Along with the food options, Milwaukee is also home to sixteen institutions of higher education, including a yeshiva.

The largest institution in the entire Milwaukee metropolitan area is the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. The public, urban, research university serves more than 25,000 students on its 102-acres of land, which, on top of hosting 14 colleges, has the only graduate school of freshwater science in the nation.

Milwaukee features a number of religious institutions, some of which feature liberal arts curriculum, including Concordia University Wisconsin, Wisconsin Lutheran College, Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, Marquette University, and Mount Mary University. Mount Mary serves only woman at the undergraduate level, and was the first and only woman’s 4-year Catholic college in the state, but now offers coeducational graduate programs. Serving more than 11,000 students, Marquette claims the title of largest private institution in the state, as well as one of the largest Jesuit institutions in the nation. It was also the first co-ed Catholic institution in the world when it began accepting women back in 1909.

Also headquartered in the City of Festivals is the Medical College of Wisconsin, a private medical and graduate school. It is only one of two medical schools in the state. With the closure of the Art Institute of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design is the remaining purveying of Bachelor’s of Fine Art in the Historic Third Ward, one of the city’s art districts. Milwaukee is also home to the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Milwaukee offers several options for public transport being serviced by intercity rail and bus systems, as well as high speed auto and passenger water ferries, and two airports. The majority of residents rely on their automobiles, but the city, overall, has a high walkability rating, especially in more densely-populated areas.
