Am learning a lot | There are a lot of compelling lectures given on campus. Professors are active and promote student activism and involvement in the community. I've learned so much this past fall semester and I've made interesting connections with like-minded colleagues. |
Bang for the buck | It's a really expensive school, however there are plenty of scholarship opportunities for lower-class students. I don't appreciate that the tuition rose because of increased funding for sports. |
Tips for prospective students | Do as much extra-curricular activities as you can while you're still in high school. My extra-curricular activities helped me get accepted into Manhattanville. My SAT grades weren't as important as I thought they would be. This college prides itself on its diverse student body and giving lower-income students a chance to succeed intellectually. |
Great for these types of students | Activists |

In three sentences | Manhattanville College has a wonderful atmosphere for both learning and living that does not interfere with everyday activities. Academics at Manhattanville offer a small student to teacher ratio that allows for a one on one experience with the professors to allow for optimal learning. Manhattanville College, although a small school has big intentions for their students and aids them in their learning process throughout their time here and even after graduation. |
Academic Rigor | Academics at Manhattanville College are very important. Small student to teacher ratios give students the opportunity to reach out to their professors both inside and outside of the classroom. Small class sizes also allow for the students to be a part of the conversation in the class, regardless of the style of class such as lecture or seminar style. Professors do have strict offices hours but are easily available for meetings outside of their posted hours. The Manhattanville College Library offers tools and services for students that allow the students to opportunity to do their best work. The Learning Commons, located in the library, houses the writing center. The writing center are professors in the English department who offer their brains and help students with papers whether they are for an English class or not. They will help with outlines for papers and even help with editing as well. The best part about the writing center is that it is free of charge and professors are posted at the center throughout the entire day. |
Dorm Life | Living on campus definitely offers a different experience compared to those who commute but it is by no means a mandatory experience. The residence halls are some of the nicest living halls I saw when I was looking for schools. The freshman residence hall, Spellman Hall have the biggest rooms I have ever seen on a college campus. Most, if not all rooms in Spellman have sinks so you do not even have to leave your room to wash your face or brush your teeth. Yes there are communal bathrooms however there are two on each floor, one for girls and one for boys, and they are the cleanest public bathrooms I have ever seen. As you progress through the other buildings the rooms do get a little smaller but there is an additional space to entertain friends and you have your own bathroom. The suite buildings, Dammann and Tenney Halls, are suites with six people to a room with a common room and a bathroom. All of the buildings are coed by floor but not by room so your roommates are the same sex but your neighbor might not be. Life in the residence halls allows students to experience what it is like to live away from home and essentially on your own without actually being alone. |
Food and Dining | Food on campus is similar to that of cafeteria food but a thousand times better. There are many options in the cafeteria throughout the day and each station has something different. Each station has a sign listing the foods for that particular station and dietary concerns are addressed. There are gluten free options as well as vegetarian/vegan options. We have our own brick oven pizza station that I personally think rivals the family pizzeria by my house. The second area to get food is the pub. The pub is open from 8am to midnight everyday and offers a variety of foods as well. There are pre-made food items for students who are in a rush. Additionally there are other foods like wraps, burgers, burritos, salads and pasta just to name a few. The pub also acts kind of like a mini convenience store. There are snacks and drinks and even microwaveable meals like raman and easy-mac. Students do not go hungry on this campus but do not usually gain the Freshman 15 because of all the hills and stairs on campus. The food is obviously not the home cooking I am used to but I never leave anywhere hungry and that is really all I can hope for. |
Campus Safety | Manhattanville College is a gated campus with only one entrance both on and off campus. There is a booth at the entrance of campus that everyone will pass when entering or leaving and there is always at least one member of Campus Safety in the booth. After 8pm, they close the second lane entering campus and will ask to see your ID. By doing this, Campus Safety always knows who is on campus. Campus Safety does rounds every hour throughout the whole campus and is there to help you if you ever need it. There are Emergency Blue lights throughout the campus so if something happens or you are not feeling very safe you can hit the button and Campus Safety will come immediately and help. Although Manhattanville is a gated campus I do not feel confined to the campus. |

Am learning a lot | Manhattanville College has a full rage of majors and minors with knowledgeable professors who have a passion for the subjects they teach. Since every professor is passionate their lessons don't bore me to death and I walk away from the semester feeling like I actually learned something. Not only are the classes educational but there is such diversity on campus that I learn so much about other countries and their cultures. |
Am enjoying being here | I went to college thinking no matter where I went I would be miserable because I am not a home away from home person but Manhattanville really surprised me. The campus has such a community feeling everyone is friendly and I instantly felt at home there. Every professor I've had has really made an effort to get to know me and I feel like they genuinely care about not just me but my education as a whole. |
Bang for the buck | Manhattanville is expensive but they do make an effort to make it affordable for those who cannot pay the full price tag. There are a wide range of scholarship options as well as grants. With financial aid my bill is at the same price as a state school and Manhattanville has many work study options for student who are eligible. |
Tips for prospective students | Apply for as many scholarships as possible it is worth it. Also keep communication open with Student Accounts, the Financial Aid Office and the department of your prospective major. Some departments give scholarships towards freshman. |
Great for these types of students | Manhattanville College is great for any student who loves a small school feel, a close proximity to the city, professors that actually know your name and a beautiful campus (there's a castle!). |

Am learning a lot | The classes that I've taken have been very interesting. The introduction level classes give a very good idea of the different subjects you can pursue and enjoy. The advanced classes as well seem to cover the subject thoroughly. Many of the teachers are wonderful and helpful. They're often around for you to ask questions. Most times, they reply to questions on weekends and allow time to help you and speak to you after class, before class, or during their office hours. |
Am enjoying being here | This school is very nice! We have a fairly wide variety of food for the students to choose from and a meal plan to suit almost every students' need. There are a bunch of on- campus jobs for those who have been awarded Federal Work Study, as well as for those that have not. The party scene is around if you want to be a part of it but it's also easy to avoid if you'd rather not be. The people are very nice, for the most part, as well. |
Bang for the buck | This school is very expensive. That's a fact. They do, however, try very hard to award scholarships and grant money to those who need it. I don't think that many people have their full need met, but they do their best to award money. Actually, recently they have increased the amount for each merit scholarship. |
Tips for prospective students | Take advantage of the small class sizes. If you're having trouble, it's very helpful because the teacher most likely knows that you are having a hard time. Also, experiment with classes. If you think you want to major in Biology, but you're also interested in Psychology, take introduction to Biology and introduction to Psychology. Both introductory classes will count for something towards graduation in the end :) |
Great for these types of students | Those who enjoy close communities (everyone seems to know everyone on the Manhattanville campus) and students who are alright managing their own time. |
