Founded in 1839 and nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia Military Institute is the oldest state-supported military college in the United States. VMI confers bachelor’s degrees in 14 academic majors within departments of Science, Liberal Arts, Engineering, and Social Sciences. All students at VMI earn the rank of Cadets and are required to live in barracks which are subject to daily inspection. In addition, all first year students are introduced to the challenges of military life through a tradition known as the “Rat Line” featuring several workouts per day.
