In which ways do you feel you are learning and growing?
UNCW offers professors with experience in their field and knowledgable about what they teach. They find ways to make discussions interesting, foster classroom community, and prepare students for the real world. Not only that, but classroom sizes are also fairly small, allowing for personal connections.
How are you enjoying your time at this college?
UNCW is great. It is a laidback, but still challenging environment with countless resources for students. There is no football team, but there are many ways to get involved and prosper career development with clubs and organizations.
What tips can you share with prospective students?
Be prepared to make the first move and go out to talk to people. Try to get to know people for who they are. UNCW is not the most diverse school in a lot of aspects, but everybody has a personality outside of what it might seem.

Am learning a lot | Although I've only been attending for a semester, I really enjoyed the professors here. Colleges employ professors to earn a reputation for the school with their research. Many schools don't even care about the teaching; as long as the teacher's research is getting the school recognized, the teacher is left alone. At UNCW, the students are required to submit evaluations of the professor. In my opinion, this keeps the teachers on track. Each professor made it easy to approach them about questions I had, either by office hours or emails. This ensures learning because it is easy to learn from such great professors. |
Am enjoying being here | The atmosphere of this school is absolutely fantastic. When I step on the campus I feel an immediate sense of community, which is really important to me. I enjoy all of the facilities provided, especially the dining halls and the rec center. They really do a good job keeping up with the landscaping and the aesthetics. It's a great place to be. |
Bang for the buck | Apparently this is one of the cheapest in state schools to go to, but you would never know. They do a wonderful job using your tuition money wisely, especially with the economy these days. |
Tips for prospective students | I would say get involved early. It's a wonderful experience to feel connected with my school community by being a part of clubs. Take advantage of all the opportunity at UNCW, but at the same time academics are crucial. That is above and beyond the most important part of going to college. Start early with you studying; halfway through the semester is not the time to decide that you want to start studying. |
Great for these types of students | If you are a social, laid back person then UNCW is for you. The people here are absolutely wonderful. They are so easy to get along with and are always eager to make new friends. |

Am learning a lot | I am a transfer student from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Wilmington has been such an amazing experience. The professors are extremely helpful and approachable. My favorite class of the week is my 8:00am Tuesday-Thursday which is quite surprising, not many students would love their 8:00am! College is not a cake walk, I'm not going to lie, but if you do the work you will reap the benefits and the grades. I've managed to maintain on Dean and Chancellor's List these past two years. |
Am enjoying being here | I am a transfer student from Appalachian State University and I'm just going to let you know, its a complete 180 from there. The campus is absolutely gorgeous and after about a week you know where all the buildings are. All the academic buildings are on this big long walk called Chancellor's Walk so if you're looking for your classroom, start there. During the first week Student Ambassador's are out there helping lost students and giving away free lemonade and water. Oh, and you probably already know this but the weather is gorgeous. It was the second week of November and I was out on the beach-where else can you do that?! |
Bang for the buck | Wilmington is a big enough city where there is tons of stuff to do but it's not like the campus is really spread out like State is. Wilmington offers a bunch of unique opportunities such as the ocean, close shopping, eclectic downtown area, historic landmarks, great professors, and tons of great opportunities on campus too. |
Tips for prospective students | Don't be intimidated to join clubs, organizations, Greek life, religious organizations and other groups. These are the BEST ways to meet friends that have common interests. I am involved in the equestrian team, Greek life, and two religious organizations and these people are some of my best friends. |
Great for these types of students | Wilmington is a very sociable place. Walking down Chancellor's you will always see someone you know and it's great to see all your friends around campus. I thought I wasn't going to like the weather but honestly the heat was not an issue for me, because there is great AC in the dorms and apartments and it's only really hot for about two months! |

Am learning a lot | I looked at several colleges before choosing UNCW and I can say it is the best decision that I could have made. Student to Teacher ratio is better than average making it easier to get assistance from an instructor when needed. I am a Chemistry major and of course my classes are going to be difficult, but if I begin to struggle in an area, I know that there are always open labs and teacher aides to offer me extra guidance. Free Help is always available upon request. |
Am enjoying being here | I love the coast and being 5 minutes away from the beautiful beach makes this school even better. It's great after being in class, heading down to the beach for some relaxation and quite study time - Who could ask for more. |
Bang for the buck | The cost to attend this school is cheaper than schools closer to my home and the Admissions Department really go out of their way in finding financial aide to assist my tuition. |
Tips for prospective students | Be involved from Day 1, do not sit back and hope to make friends - make it happen. Homesickness is a common problem among freshmen and I even experienced it myself. I got involved with every club that I could fit into my schedule and became so busy with organizations and meeting others that soon it became very clear that I am a True Teal Sea Hawk (Our Mascot and school color by the way) and I am determined to graduate with High Honors. |
Great for these types of students | If you are seeking to get a Chemistry Major, I recommend this school. I cannot begin to tell you how much I have learned just this past semester. The Instructors help their students to grasp what they are teaching and offer so much extra help it is unreal. I will be taking the MCAP next year and feel comfortable that I will place high enough because of the instruction that I have had these last 2 years. |

In three sentences | A noun is defined as a person, place, or thing. The University of North Carolina - Wilmington can be compared to the perfect noun. The instructors who teach there are polite and truly care about you and your grades; Wilmington has an ideal location, the beach; there are always things to do at Wilmington no matter what is of interest to the individual. |
Tips for prospective students | When you come to Wilmington do not hesitate to get involved with something somewhere. Whether you become involved with academic clubs, athletics, or Greek life, get involved and get the most out of your college experience. Also, upon arrival to UNCW make sure that you use your time wisely and master time management as you will have a great deal of free time and freedom that you did not receive from high school. |
Academic Rigor | The classes at Wilmington are not for slackers. They are difficult and challenging, but an A is definitely in reach if you push yourself and put in the effort. The instructors present the material in a way that makes it interesting and easy to learn. This does not mean that studying is an option though, studying is a must. For many students, high school is a breeze due to the fact that teachers teach what will be on the test. At Wilmington though, teachers teach the material and expect you to have a full grasp of it. The instructors want you to take the information they provide and be able to see it conceptually. |
Dorm Life | The dorm life at UNCW is great! You can make many friends due to the fact that there are all different types of people who have different interests and hobbies, so no matter what you like to do it is likely that someone else has the same interest right down the hall. |
Food and Dining | Whether you like a good home cooked meal or you like fast food, Wilmington has it all. If you would like a nice home style meal, then Wagoner Hall and Dubâs Caf© is for you. On the other hand though, if you like fast food then Hawkâs Nest is just the place for you. At Wagoner Hall and Dubâs caf© you can find pasta, a deli bar, a soup and salad bar, pizza, and much more. At Hawkâs Nest is where you will find Subway, Chik-fil-a, Mexican, an Italian food bar, Salad, Varsity Grill, smoothies and even more. The dining experience at Wilmington will leave you wanting more. |
What to do for fun | Of course at Wilmington there is the beach where opportunities are endless. You can swim, surf, play sports on the sand, or just relax. If you head away from the beach there is downtown Wilmington where you can go on a tour of an old Battleship, go to a Serpentarium, or go to any of the restaurants. On campus there is a movie theater, a great recreation center that will very shortly have 100,000 square feet added and two pools, and arguably one of the most beautiful campuses in North Carolina. |
Bang for the buck | Wilmington is worth every penny spent. It has the top of the line education, the perfect location, and the fun never stops. Even though you are attending school, it will feel like a beach vacation trip the entire time |
Clubs and Activities | Wilmington offers a wide array of clubs from academic to athletic. There are also Intramural sports that are slightly less competitive than club sports. There is also a movie theater, varsity sporting events, and various other activities offered all the time at Wilmington |
Campus Safety | Campus Safety is great! The campus police are very friendly and willing to help in any situation. They are always patrolling and can be seen or found throughout campus. There are also call boxes that are spread throughout campus. When an individual is at one call box at least one other call box is already in site. |

Am learning a lot | The classes at UNCW are very helpful, especially if you pay attention and do your work. You will learn a lot you didn't know before, and as you move into your major you will learn even more that interests you. I would recommend going to school here for anyone, especially if you love the beach! |
Am enjoying being here | The environment is laid back, friendly, and gorgeous. The campus isn't too big or too small. You see a lot of the same people which is nice because you have familiar faces around. You can make friends in your dorm, classes, or anywhere else on campus. |
Bang for the buck | I am not currently paying for my school, but I will be paying off loans later in life. I am not looking forward to it, but anywhere you go to school will be expensive. It's not the cheapest school ever, but it's really nice and worth it. |
Tips for prospective students | Talk to everyone at orientation and keep in touch with them until the school year starts because they could be your friends for a while. It sounds overrated, but get involved. Hang out on campus a lot and figure out where your classes are before the first day. |
Great for these types of students | Surfers, skaters, athletes, book worms, party animals, and friendly people will all love UNCW. It can provide for all types of people, and I would recommend it to anyone. |

Am learning a lot | I am a completely different person from when I graduated high school to my current self. I am a junior at UNCW and I have learned so much that I do not even know where to begin. The teachers except for those rare few are all caring individuals that are very concerned with whether their students are learning and understanding the material presented in class. My knowledge base has already far exceeded what I expected before I began studying here at UNCW. The professors really try to involve their students in the learning process. The students rate the professors at the end of each semester in a variety of characteristics which ensures that you do not get a professor that just sits back and says read the book. There is a system here at UNCW that allows you to always be able to communicate with your professors by either email, phone calls, personal counseling and review sessions to ensure that you get all the help that you will ever need to ensure success. There are also many free tutoring services offered on campus. |
Am enjoying being here | I love it here at UNCW. The environment is very laid back and the campus is very easy to navigate. The campus is centrally located in the city of Wilmington. You are 7 minutes from the beach and 7 minutes from the clubs and unique shops of historic downtown Wilmington. The weather never gets too cold and perfect in the summer. Everyone here is friendly and approachable. You can not find a better environment anywhere. |
Bang for the buck | This is by far one of the cheapest state schools that combine superb academics and reputation for a reasonable price. It is very possible to work part time and pay for your tuition at the same time. The school also offers programs that allow you to work in a variety of areas of the school to pay for tuition and financial aid. If you are looking to get a good quality education that you can be proud of that you will not be paying off for the rest of your life, you will not find anywhere better. |
Tips for prospective students | Get involved early, there are involvement fairs at the beginning of each semester but you can always join clubs, groups and organizations at anytime. It is a great way to meet people and make new friends. Other than that just be prepared to have a life changing experience. |
Great for these types of students | This is a great University for students who want a laid back environment, those who do not want to be overwhelmed by a enormous campus and student body. Those who want to feel involved with the university and the decisions being made that will effect their education. Students who do not want to paying back student loans for the rest of their lives and of course those students who want to live the BEACH life. |

In three sentences | Let's admit it- we all are here because of either Wilmington's historic beautiful riverfront downtown, or Wrightsville Beach. Being a Seahawk is amazing, but ultimately you decide how rigorous of socialization you subject yourself to. Although I spent my first semester on the introverted side, I see so many opportunities in the future and like the atmosphere. |
Tips for prospective students | Don't slack off at the end of your senior year because doing homework and going to class does nothing but get harder when college hits. I would also recommend applying early if you can. Make sure your recommendation letters are from the right teachers. Here's my biggest tip: Don't turn down UNCW for another school based on prestige. Truly we are without a football team and lack tailgating but it surely makes us unique. It's a beautiful school with amazing professors- and it also takes many more AP credits than similar schools. |
Academic Rigor | If you organize and plan, you can pass your classes without extensive mental exhaustion. Professors vary, but all of them are willing to help and answer questions. Procrastination is your biggest enemy because many important projects/papers tend to be due around the same time. With proper preparation and adequate studying most people can succeed. |
Dorm Life | There are so many options on places to live. Firstly you can live off campus as a freshman which is a viable option. Secondly, you could have a traditional dorm experience at Galloway of the all girl dorm, Belk. My unique place I chose to live is the University Apartments- where there is the convenience of living on campus but with the privacy of an apartment. You have your own room, and share the apartment with three other people. The only downside to this location is the difficultly meeting new people unlike in traditional dorms. I love the variety UNCW has to offer. |
Food and Dining | Wag gets old before you even internalize you moved away from home, and Food dollars always seem to run out before the end of the semester. Keep up with your meal plan and know how much is left on your account. I recommend the plans with meal swipes per semester, because the others expire weekly which is often wasteful. Food Dollars transfer is left over to the spring semester, but then expire before summer. There are a few good places on campus, and Landwich is a great option. My biggest complaint is in between classes their is extensive lines and traffic. |
What to do for fun | The best thing to do is go to the beach! You could even take a ferry Southport. If the weather isn't nice downtown is always inspirational and awing. Around campus there are many places to sit and relax- inside and out. There are a few popular clubs nearby, and downtown has an unending night life. The rec center here is stunning and perfect for anyone looking to stay fit. There is an indoor and outdoor pool! |
Bang for the buck | I was able to finish an entire years worth of credits simply from AP classes and duel enrollment at my local community college in high school! This has put me much farther ahead than most of the other freshman- and will ultimately save me a lot of money on tuition, books, and other fees. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | There is a Wildlife Preserve that is awful to explore- there's even a lake. |
Great for these types of students | Relaxed personalities yet still hardworking and determined about educational pursuits |
Greek Life | Although I didn't rush, there is a lot of sororities and frats on campus. It was weird getting used to at first, but I might rush later on if I have the time. |
Campus Safety | There are always police patrolling. I feel safe at night on campus. |

Am learning a lot | Although UNCW has requirements for all students to take Basic Studies courses that you may not want to take, embrace every single class you are enrolled in. I didn't want to take a phys ed class in the beginning, but it was a great experience and I learned a lot. English classes are the best here! |
Am enjoying being here | I absolutely LOVE this school. Being from the north (NJ), I am completely enjoying the warm weather and going to the beach until it finally gets cold in November! Our campus really embraces Seahawk Nation as the main color teal can be seen everywhere. There are so many different activities and clubs to get involved in when you're not in class. GET INVOLVED :) |
Bang for the buck | I was so suprised how cheap this school is compared to even In-State schools in NJ. Definitely worth the price!!! |
Tips for prospective students | -get ready for some flooding on campus... pack rain boots!! -randall library can get really crowded during finals week so find a secret study spot somewhere else on campus! -sign up your team early for the Oozeball tournament (mud volleyball) -Dub's Cafe has really good ice cream -get a bike, it really makes your trip to class a lot faster! -be outside as much as possible! -GET INVOLVED :) |
Great for these types of students | -loves warm weather & the beach -very active (working out and playing sports) -has school spirit (even for basketball games since we don't have a football team) -laid back person who is spontaneous and fun! |

Am learning a lot | The faculty are friendly and more than willing to offer help. They seem like they really want to get to know the students. Many of the faculty are also very well educated and really make an effort to teach the material in a way that is understandable for all students. Another cool thing about the faculty is that they don't pretend that they don't know what students do during their free time like many professors do. |
Am enjoying being here | The campus is located in a great city, and there is always something to do on and around campus. The students are all friendly and are willing to help if you ask. It's always nice to be able to go to the beach after class for a tan. Although there is some diversity at UNCW, but a great majority of the students seem to be white surfer girls/guys. |
Bang for the buck | Tuition is VERY cheap for in-state compared to many other options. The summer school tuition prices are also very reasonable for those students who want to take summer credits. The campus entertainment organizations are always playing a movie in the theater or having some kind of comedy or drama act, and it is usually either free or just a couple dollars to attend, so that is definitely a plus. |
Tips for prospective students | Get ready for the heat. Definitely don't expect to skip classes and be able to get by...it wont work. Don't assume UNCW is just a party school and you wont have to work hard because you'll end of failing out within a semester. Finally, bring your swimsuit because the beach is where its at. |
Great for these types of students | Surfers or hippies. Anyone who is laid back but willing to work hard to get their degree. |

Am enjoying being here | I love it here. The people are really chill and you're only minutes away from the beach. |
Bang for the buck | Obviously, college is far too expensive for anyone's tastes, but otherwise it's a great school for the money! |
Tips for prospective students | If you don't like party people, don't stay in Galloway. It's six floors of constant party. |
