In which ways do you feel you are learning and growing?
I’ve learned a lot, especially about diversity. I’ve grown to learn new leadership skills as well as communication skills. I’ve also learned how to be more open minded and to be creative.
How are you enjoying your time at this college?
I’ve had a lot of fun, especially with my best friend. There’s a lot of places to hang out, the library is easy to access and peaceful depending on your level of comfort. The food is really good as well. I’ve also like a lot of my classes, they have some valuable and interesting topics, and every professor is different too.
What tips can you share with prospective students?
One of the tips I’d like to mention is communication. Professors will understand if you communicate with them and your peers are willing to help you if you communicate with them. I’d also like to mention time management, the earlier the better. Sometimes the assignment gets forgotten or you’re in a rush because you waited until the last minute but if it’s earlier, it gives the opportunity to get it over with. It’s also helpful to study using it because there’s extra time to review it.
What qualities do you have that have best prepared you for success at this institution?
Communicational skills and note-taking skills are 2 skills that helped me a lot. I’ve had to communicate with so many people, whether it was because I had to or because I needed to. As for note-taking, the professors go through the lesson fast and most of it is in the book anyway, so it’s better if you could take notes on the book ahead of time.
In what ways do you feel this college challenges students academically?
This college challenges students academically because they let you choose classes that are fitted to what you already know and then they also have honors courses that you can take if in the Honors college that helps you challenge your mind in 4 specific aspects.
How would you describe the food and dining options?
The food is really good, they even have fast food options along the road or in the JCSU. They have a meal plan, yes it’s paid for, but it makes it easier for people to get something to eat without consistently paying for everything they get.
In your experience, what is there to do for fun at this college?
For fun, I mostly walked around the quad or around the pond. The scenery is what I liked the most so it was fun for me, especially listening to music. I’m not sure what else there is other than joining the activities they have like the socials, gatherings, etc.
How does this institution support campus safety or mental health and wellness programs?
They have blue lights around campus for safety that instantly contacts campus police who are stationed on campus. They also have 2 amazing counseling places that could help with mental health. They walk the support dogs once every week or 2 and they have group sessions or private sessions that are free to students. The student health center also has options that will help with mental health and wellbeing.
How has your college supported your career development and future goals?
The advisors for your area specifically help to guide your classes to match your career goal and they also match it to the specific regime that is set for your major.

Am learning a lot | My college experience thus far has taught me to work hard, how to prioritize my time better, and how to enjoy a full college experience. Classes here are lots of work, in order to succeed I had to learn great study habits, become friends with my professors, and know that there is always help somewhere in the university. I never once felt overwhelmed or overworked and I soon realized that the University of Nevada, Reno has helped me learn not only inside the classrooms, but outside of them as well. |
Am enjoying being here | The University of Nevada, Reno is filled with aspiring professors, fun, outgoing people, and many activities that students can join. All it takes is a foot out the door and be ready to experience a great college experience. |
Bang for the buck | UNR is not a very expensive college, but for those that do need that extra help there is plenty of places on campus and online that can help pay for your school. |
Tips for prospective students | When entering UNR, never feel the need to become overwhelmed or overworked. There is help everywhere for every question you might have. If a class becomes too difficult, talk to your professor, they are there to help you, so do not feel like you have to endure it, the professors enjoy to help the students. Tutoring or any extra curricular activity can be found very easily all you need is to ask around. Besides that, have an open mind to college, it should be more than just hard work, but you should also enjoy every minute of it! |
Great for these types of students | Students who are looking for a college that is filled with diversity, fun people and great leadership opportunities, this is a place for you. There is anything from club sports to greek life, all it takes is an open mind and a will for one to find adventure. |

Am learning a lot | Though many of the introductory courses are large lecture classes, the vast majority are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants. Professors are generally very accessible and constantly encourage students to come to office hours. Unless of course you prefer to remain anonymous, in this way, it is possible to get to know all of your professors, which in my opinion greatly enriches the learning experience. For those wishing to challenge themselves academically, the university has an honors program, which offers smaller, more demanding classes for highly motivated students. In addition, UNR is considered one of the top research institutions in the country. For those with an interest in doing undergraduate research, most science faculty are eager to share their research and are more than willing to welcome undergraduates into their labs. |
Am enjoying being here | Whether strolling along the tree-lined quad, watching a swan glide gracefully across Manzanita Lake, or gazing at the snow-covered mountains from the upper floors of the student union, one cannot help but be taken in by the beauty of the campus. During the fall and spring months, students enjoy playing Frisbee on the grass, sharing lunch with friends on one of the many benches around campus, or studying between classes underneath a sprawling shade tree. On-campus activities hosted by the university and its countless student organizations are plentiful. Attending the Wolf Pack football and basketball games is also a popular pastime among students. If sports are not your cup of tea, not to worry. Plenty of other options are available. Throughout the school year at Nightingale Concert Hall, numerous recitals and concerts are offered by students and faculty, as well as by well-known professional musicians who travel to Reno for the annual Performing Arts Series. Many of these concerts are deeply discounted or free for university students. |
Bang for the buck | The University of Nevada, Reno is definitely one of the biggest bargains out there when it comes to higher education. For out-of-state students, yearly expenses at UNR amount to less than half that of most private universities. Those coming from nearby states can also take advantage of the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program or the Good Neighbor Program. Although tuition has recently increased due to the state budget crisis, tuition remains low for Nevada residents. For those meeting the state academic requirements, the Millennium Scholarship offers further tuition discounts. Additionally, the university offers multiple academic merit scholarships, including extremely generous scholarships for National Merit Scholars. Despite being a public school with relatively low tuition, the university offers high quality academic programs to its students. There are about 150 different programs to choose from, so the options are virtually limitless and many students pursue double majors. Some of the degree programs are even nationally recognized. For instance, UNR offers a chemistry degree certified by the American Chemical Society. The academic facilities are also of high caliber. Last fall, the university opened a beautiful new student union and library. In addition, a new math and science center is scheduled to open next spring. The new library, also known as the Knowledge Center, has an enormous computer lab called @One. This computer lab, which has an uncanny resemblance to the Star Wars Cantina, is open late and has an abundance of computers, so having your own is not necessary. It’s a great place to study. |
Tips for prospective students | Keep an open mind and explore as many different subjects as possible during your first year. If you limit your options from the beginning, you may never discover your passion. There are so many fields of study in college that most students have no exposure to in high school, and at a mid-size school like UNR there are countless opportunities to try new activities and broaden your perspectives. Be sure to take advantage of them because this may be the only time in your life that you have the opportunity to do so. One such experience is the UNR study abroad program, known as the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC). Upon returning to the U.S., many students rave about their experiences studying in foreign countries. Many of these programs are offered over the summer, which allows students to participate without getting behind in their degree programs. In addition, there are scholarships available specifically for those wishing to study abroad. |
Great for these types of students | Anyone can find his or her niche at the University of Nevada, Reno. Because the student body is diverse and because of the great variety of academic departments, athletics, and student organizations, there is bound to be a group that shares your interests. The campus is small enough to allow you to always see someone you know around campus, but is large enough to allow you to have your own space and/or anonymity if you want or need it. |

Am enjoying being here | No matter where you are, college is fun. You will enjoy the freedom of being on your own with less boundaries. Live it up while you can, but don't over do it because all the freedom can sometimes be a dangerous privilege to a student. |
Bang for the buck | College can be pricey no matter where you go. Even if your parents can help you, try to save as much of your funds as your can. There is nothing worse than being on your own with uncomfortable living situations because of funds. Any spare time you have, fill out scholarship after scholarship and try to get grants as well. Try to make a loan your last option because that is money that has to be paid back. |
Tips for prospective students | Make sure you take advantage of the fact that the advisers are there to help you. Just like your counciler in high school. I was a little confused in the beginning, but once i asked for help i was pointed in the right direction. Also make sure you have your priorities straight. So many students lose focus on there studies because they choose their social life over school. Your scholarships can be taken aways just as easy as they were given to you. I really want to make that clear to all the Nevada residents on the millenium scholarship. Lastly, don't be afraid to experience new things. Your in college now and on the road of your life's journey, know what you want out of it. |

Am learning a lot | The facilities at UNR are staffed by intellegent people and the resources are pratically endless. The main library is huge! The professors are very passionate about their area of study; they are always willing to lend a hand or just talk. |
Am enjoying being here | UNR has a great variety of clubs, events, and extra-ccurricular activities. The living halls are the place to meet people, from the RAs to other residents. The campus is beautiful! |
Bang for the buck | As an Oregon resident, moving out of state seemed like a big hassle, but UNR is affordable and very comforting. The buildings on campus are very nice, and for a big campus, it's easy to walk from one end to the other. The grounds are well-kept and the campus shuttle is accessible to anyone. |
Tips for prospective students | Be ready for extreme but fun weather! Buying books online through the campus bookstore is easy--use it! Keep in mind which major one has chosen; the departments are very useful for scholarships, work-study, and pretty much anything. |
Great for these types of students | The students at UNR are so diverse that everyone will fit in. Anyone looking for a change of pace can find the right one at UNR. |

Will learn a lot | I believe that I can learn so much from all the intelligent people around me- not only teachers but from culture...LIFE! |
Will enjoy being here | Some of my family resides in Reno so I would be close to those who are very close to my heart! I toured the campus for 3 hours- that was intense! |
Bang for the buck | I didn't get the rank of scholarship I wanted so the overall tuition seemed to me to be more expensive than it could have been. Beggars can't be choosers... |
Tips for prospective students | Reno is a dry place so be prepared with your emergency lip chap and lotion. I know this sounds funny but nobody wants crusty crusts! |
Great for these types of students | Reno has so much to offer for engineering people and medical people too! |

In three sentences | The University of Nevada, Reno is an amazing school. It provides all the necessary amentities and activities to allow you to get the perfect college experience. I have made memories, friends, and educational acheivements that will last a lifetime. |
Tips for prospective students | There is a lot you can do to keep up with the big change from being a high school senior to a college freshman. One of the many tips I would suggest for incoming freshmen is to keep up with all of your classes, when you don't understand something get help right away. And another important tip would be to make friends that you can depend on and who are supportive of your life goals, not people who are going to hold you down or distract you from your studies. |
Academic Rigor | The University of Nevada, Reno has many teachers that will challenge their students in academic fields, forcing their students to be all they can. However, studying goes a long way, if you read and do all assignments that the teacher assigns you will excel in any class. And if the teachers provide extra credit assignments, do them! |
Dorm Life | Dorm life at the University of Nevada, Reno has provided me with such an amazing experience. Everyone is so friendly that my hall and I are like one big happy family. Of course it is not always quiet when you want it to be, but hey! That's what the libraries for. |
Food and Dining | The food at the University of Nevada, Reno is perfect. When you are in the meal for buffet style dining the dining commons are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also have Einstein Bagels, Keva Juice, Starbucks, Villa Pizza, Panda Express, BoDawgs, and other eateries located throughout campus. |
What to do for fun | Since the school is in the middle of the city you will find lots of things to do year round. Casinos are within walking distance and skiing/snowboarding are only a thirty minute drive away. There are also movie theatres and bowling alleys nearby, and even an outdoor ice skating rink in the winter. |

Am learning a lot | This is a good school, the academics is challenging. The engineering program is solid. For your first year, the department gathers all engineers from different fields and put them in one class to build a hovercraft, what you come out from that is you learn which engineering field you would like the best, you gain remarkable friendship and an early hands on practice working as a team. |
Am enjoying being here | Good school atmosphere, and if you are in Argenta 4th floor and above, facing the mountain side, it is remarkable. You get to experience waking up seeing the mountains covered in snow and at night you can just watch the city lights. The campus is generally safe, campus escort but sometimes it takes them a while to get to your location, just walk with a friend or in a group. Fun nightlife but be careful of you actions. The cops and the dorms are strict. |
Bang for the buck | If you are in the WUE program, this is a great school to go to. You save money and earn a degree at the same time. For financial aid such as a free ride for four years, do your research because this university offers that and apply really early whether or not you are sure you want to go to this school. Better safe than sorry. Because after that, financial aid is limited, you can get, a scholarship ranging from 1000 to 5000 base on your SAT, ACT Scores and GPA. If you qualify you can get a states grant and pell grant. Aside from that, you have to come up the rest out of your own pocket. Dont forget to budget some money for books, air fare or gas and personal needs when you move in either the dorms or an apartment. For books they have cheggs, you can rent your books there and the school also offers new and reused books, an option for you to choose from. |
Tips for prospective students | Apply early, especially your admission application process; you can start as early as Nov, second quarter of your senior year. There is also a living learning communities for students who are in nursing, engineering women and much more. If you want to be a part of it, do your research and apply early because spaces are limited. There is a honors programs, as well as a Trio scholars program. For meal plan I recommend Premium C or D, you would not need that many swipes a week. The DC cafe has good variety of food available to choose from. Don't buy your books early, wait until you went to your classes for a week. Student usually will change their minds, whether they like the class or not and would often drop and switch to another class. Some class would not require you to need your book. Look for good deals for books, there is a lot out there, such as amazon. |
Great for these types of students | There are a lot of kids from California, local kids in Nevada, and out-of-state kids, such as from Hawaii that goes here. This school also attracts Snowboarders and skiers from all over. |

Am learning a lot | One of my new favorite sayings is, Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. This is the University of Nevada, Reno in a nutshell. All of the professors and advisors that I have had the pleasure of conversing with and learning from, are simply incredible. They all put in the time and effort into helping you succeed. So, am I learning a lot? You bet! |
Am enjoying being here | I love going to school here! Everyone is friendly and school spirited. Reno is the ultimate college town! I love that there are so many clubs and organizations you can get involved with. There is something for everyone here! |
Bang for the buck | Definitely! You get an ivy league education for way less than an actual ivy league school. |
Tips for prospective students | DO NOT! I repeat. DO NOT take 8am classes unless you absolutely have to! Trust me! It's not fun. When I started school here I was like, Well, high school started at seven so I can do 8am classes no problem. You probably won't get out of bed until after the class is over trust me I did that a few times, and turns out I missed out on some good lessons! I've learned my lesson, so now my earliest classes don't start until (at the earliest) 9am. ANOTHER IMPORTANT TIP. Don't be afraid to be yourself when you get to college. You'll probably meet others like you and then you'll become life long friends. Everyone here is pretty chill and won't judge you, so just be you. Oh and another thing, make sure you go to class!! Can't wait to meet you <3 Go Wolf Pack!! |
Great for these types of students | Anyone and everyone fits in here at UNR. There is a place for everyone! |

Am learning a lot | This is a research University, so if you are looking for honesty and integrity, this is the college to attend. There are many research opportunities for Undergraduates, so they can expand their knowledge beyond the classrooms. They also have an honor's program for interested students. |
Am enjoying being here | There are many residence halls to choose from, or many surrounding houses/apartments so you can be close to campus. The campus itself is very beautiful with a small lake, and several areas for play or relaxing in the grass under beautiful trees. |
Bang for the buck | The only way to go cheaper for Nevada students is not to attend a University. There are scholarships available on their website, as well as scholarships they give out annually based on GPA. Don't forget about the millennium scholarship! |
Tips for prospective students | Don't be afraid to see your professor during office hours. With large classes, it can be hard to get the 1 on 1 attention to understand everything the professor is teaching. Most classes also have Teaching Assistants to help you too. Sit in the front, so the teacher gets to know and recognise you a bit more. You are going to want to pull a few of your favorite teachers aside later for internship, job, scholarship, or other applications. |
Great for these types of students | Great for students going into science fields. Great for Nevada students with low college budgets. |

Am learning a lot | I am in the Engineering Department at UNR and I have never been worried about not know what is going on and understanding. If you don't understand you can go to any teacher you have and they can try to help you. It has all been well-paced and never really hard to get stuff done, yes it takes time, but you can work it out. |
Am enjoying being here | I love attending UNR because the campus is beautiful, exactly what I was looking for and didn't have to go out of state. I even hang out there during the summer and go to the activities that UNR puts on because it is fun. They make everything worth while to attend. Everyone is nice, you get to know new people, and the campus isn't huge where you feel alone. |
Bang for the buck | For what I pay as a instate resident is cheaper than a lot of places, and realize what I am getting when I pay them. We now have an amazing library, or Knowledge Center, with amenities I still haven't discovered. Being an engineering student their DataWorks Lab is amazing. Our Student Union is new too with amazing food, and places to hold meetings and activities. Make sure to take advantages of these things. |
Tips for prospective students | Look at the campus first, if you are not happy where you are going to walking around all day, then it is not a place you are going to want to be. Talk with either a couple of advisers, students or teachers to get a feel for what is going to be like. Don't go in cold turkey expecting to be everything you want you need to do some research. |
Great for these types of students | It is a great school for people like me who don't like being in a very crowded school, or having to walk a half hour or more just to get to your next class. The setting appeals to people who love nature, seeing the seasons change, and older brick buildings. It is a place you can sit and enjoy rose gardens, fountains, and a very small lake. |
