Tuition, Cost & Aid

Affordability and Cost

Average Net Price Average net price for full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates paying the in-state or in-district tuition rate who were awarded grant or scholarship aid from federal, state or local governments, or the institution. Other sources of grant aid are excluded. Aid awarded anytime during the full aid year is included.

Average net price is generated by subtracting the average amount of federal, state or local government, or institutional grant and scholarship aid from the total cost of attendance. Total cost of attendance is the sum of published tuition and required fees (lower of in-district or in-state), books and supplies and the weighted average room and board and other expenses.

Additional Costs
Room and Board The weighted average for room and board and other expenses is generated as follows:
  • (amount for on-campus room, board and other expenses * # of students living on-campus.
  • + amount for off-campus (with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus with family
  • + amount for off-campus (not with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus not with family)
divided by the total # of students. Students whose living arrangements are unknown are excluded from the calculation. For some institutions the # of students by living arrangement will be known, but dollar amounts will not be known. In this case the # of students with no corresponding dollar amount will be excluded from the denominator.

What Students Are Saying

you will never get anything more out of college for so little money. to be quite honest, the only difference between this college and a more expensive college is the food and the resources that school has to get famous people to come and give lectures. and even then we get some of those.

2 dollar taxi service, free buses with a u card.

free food from clubs(just have to read posters to know where to go- you don't even have to commit to the club, you just have to show and mooch)

free wifi, 24 hour lab, great library, free movies on occasion(popcorn and drinks included), and camping trips, hiking trips, skiing trips, how-to-drink-your-own-pee type seminars are constantly available here for really cheap.
Jill from Grayslake, IL
I have not compared tuition, but its likely just as costly as any other liberal arts college.
Emily from WI
Great for students! Lots of financial aid is available and there are lots of jobs for students even with such a small town. There are lots of sports to go to and there are a lot free games and things to do on campus.
Courteny from Saint Paul, MN
Any college will be expensive. But I like Duluth because it is cheaper than a private school and a lot smaller than the Twin Cities campus so it's kind of the best of both worlds. Tuition is about $5400 a semester. You would also have to cover a meal plan and room and board if you want to live on campus so it costs roughly $18000-$19000 per year to go to school here. But there are scholarships from UMD for new students, current students and usually each department (depending on your major) offers scholarships as well. Don't forget to fill out the FAFSA!
Kristin from Oakdale, MN
The tuition seems a little high for the school, but you will still be getting a University of Minnesota diploma, so its kind of work it. (take advantage of everything)
Tracy from Mantorville, MN
Like any major University Duluth is more spendy than any community college, but in comparison to schools in the twin cities Duluth has them far beat for price. A big benefit for the Duluth area is that living expense are great deal less than living in down town Minneapolis or St. Paul.
John from Maple Grove, MN
Most Definatly! The experiences and educational opprotunities UMD provides is worth every dollar.
