Am learning a lot | Besides certain classees that EVERYONE takes, the class size is very small, even at the Freshman level. So you will get individualized attention if you need it. The University finds the best professors, every class I have had, the professor has been flexible, courteous, and extremely competent in getting the students to understand the material. |
Am enjoying being here | It is a relatively small school, so it is a close-knit community, with not just the students, the faculty, staff, and even the small town of Belton. You can always find something to do, there are plenty of campus activities throughout the week. You will make great friends, and if you are a Follower of Christ, you will the Christian centered community of this university. All the sports teams are very good, and the games are a blast to attend. The town of Belton is located close to Austin, Waco, Fort Hood, and College Station, so if you can't find something to do on campus, a short drive will get you to some fun places. |
Bang for the buck | I would be lying if I didn't mention that this college is fairly expensive. However, the close-knit Christian Community, the great friends, the quality of the education, the fun, the memories, and the history of this University make it worth it. There are a lot of scholarships the university offers to help students lighten the load of paying for school. I cannon stress enough that the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor truly offers Education for Life...Experience of a Lifetime. |
Tips for prospective students | Be involved, UMHB likes to see students who are involved, and who will be involved in the Crusader community. What helped me, was I attended a small Christian high school, so I had letters of recommendation from my Principal and Assistant Principal, and the Religious Brothers from my school. Letters of recommendation from a Pastor a Priest will help, but also letters from people who see what you are involved in. |
Great for these types of students | First and Foremost are students who know and Love Jesus Christ. UMHB, is an AMAZING Christian Community, and you will feel welcome and at home here. Athletes also enjoy this campus, all the sports teams have winning records every season. Students who want to live in the Heart of Texas, Belton is located in a great spot of Central Texas, beautiful little town. Also, the campus is about 20 or so miles from Fort Hood, and the Army ROTC program here is new, so it is a great campus for students who want to serve after college, or current military personnel who want to take courses. |

Am learning a lot | It is not a walk in the park, but who wants to pay tuition for a blow-off class. I had a tough semester taking classes and practicing baseball, but I ended my Freshman year with a 3.5 GPA. The professors are tough, but willing to help any student that is willing to put in the effort. |
Am enjoying being here | I graduated in the top 5% of my High School class and was accepted at many large universities, but I knew from the start UMHB was the right choice for me. The classes are small enough so the professor actually knows your name and your work. The campus facilities are great. I am an athlete and work out all the time...they have a great gym...a smoothie bar...great places to run. |
Bang for the buck | UMHB is expensive, but my parents say you get what you pay for. I plan to be a nurse and UMHB has one of the best nursing schools anywhere. I don't want to be a number in an auditorium so for the caliber of instruction and the class size, great value! |
Tips for prospective students | Don't wait...visit UMHB now! I wanted to enjoy my senior year and not worry about where I was going to go to college so I did my research and visited several colleges and I made my decision in January that UMHB was the place for me. |
Great for these types of students | Students who want a more personalized college experience in a smaller, down home Christian setting located in a small town. It is perfect for smart athletes! |

Am learning a lot | Honestly, I have never learned as much as have attending UMHB. I was blessed enough to be a part of the University Honors Program, and doing so I was able to meet students that hold themselves to a higher standard. My professors have been more than helpful. Whenever I had a problem or a question I could send them an email and within 10 or 15 minutes, sometimes any time of day I could get an answer to my questions. The professors here really do care about whether or not you understand the information. They're less concerned with grades and more interested in whether or not the students are prepared to succeed not only in their class but as a student at the University. I could ask any professor where to get help, and they were willing either to help me themselves or point me in the direction of a professor who could. They paid close individual attention to the way we think and how we process information, and every single one of my professors tried to relate to me on more than a student-to-teacher basis. They tried to bring me up to a higher level of academia and try to grow me as a student. |
Am enjoying being here | In the summer, before I began my first semester of college I couldn't imagine being here at UMHB. I didn't believe this was where I was supposed to be. I participated in the University's Welcome Week 2010 for incoming freshman and transfer student. During that first week my entire perspective on the University changed. I learned that here, they want this to be a place we can call home. A place to find brothers, sisters, friends, spouses etc and live together as a community of Crusaders. I'll never forget when I changed my mind about my expectations of my first year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. It was the last event of Welcome Week, the dubbing ceremony. It's an event where all the new students sit out in from of Luther Memorial, light our candles, go on bended knee before our faculty and professors and pledge ourselves Crusaders Forever. To most students it's kinda a funny tradition, it's kinda chaotic there isn't any robes or chanting in the background, but to me it was the day I decided I was going to make the most of what God had given me. Not to long afterward I found friends that I could depend on. What was more I found brothers and sisters in Christ who I trust and rely on. We walk together as Christians and as Crusaders. On campus, there really is a sense of comradery. If you need a ride anywhere there is always a friendly face and a willing friend to give you a ride. I think the biggest form of unity we have at the University is the Home football games. Hundreds of students, alumni, faculty and staff all gather together in their cars, line up, roll down their windows and scream with a police escort all the way to the football field. Then, like crusaders going off to war we cheer for our team. Everywhere you go and to every event the students you see are always happy, always excited to see you, and if anyone is having a bad day or is worried about anything the students here are the first to pray for you, cry with you, laugh with you and h... |
Bang for the buck | This university is rather pricey compared to other colleges, but definitely the education you'll receive here is worth it. I'm only a freshman and I've learned more than I have my entire life. Not only that the faculty and staff make themselves available to you. In my first semester, I had the Provost of the University, the Dean of my College of study, the Head of the Math Department, the most respected Psych professor on campus and one of the top History professors in here field as my teachers. I also had countless tutoring and educational programs and aid as my disposal. You also, get small classes so you really know the people you see every day. The library is phenomenal, on a cold or rainy day you can get a coffee and do your homework or read a good book. Also, the people in the Registrar's office and Bursar's office are really nice and helpful. I've had to be in there every week and everyday I've had to go in there they greet me with a smile and a laugh. They answer any questions I might have, and go out of their way to make the endless amount of paperwork go quickly and smoothly. When you pay the costs for college at UMHB, you pay for quality and community. The people here have hearts that are as open as your pocket book. :D |
Tips for prospective students | Don't just take a tour (Although that's a good first step.) Attend a Preview weekend or have a conversation with some of the students here. That's the real measure of a college. You can see people going about their lives on campus, but it isn't until you talk to one of them that you know whether or not you can see yourself here. If you do attend, get involved. The people here want to know you, but if you spend all year like a hermit in your room you do yourself an injustice. You miss out on all the memories and friends you'll make. Who knows you could meet your best friend here, or your future roommate. Just give people a chance cause they want to give you one. |
Great for these types of students | Students who like to learn and have fun. My Old Testament professor made the class interesting for all students, whether they believe in God or not. He referenced movies all the time, even doing a Scarlet O'Hara impression once or twice when we discussed certain Bible stories. He also brought in visual aids and show and tell things on multiple occasions. Many of my professors are not merely academics. A lot of them love making modern connections to the things of the past. Learning becomes much more dynamic here. It really become more than just text on a page. The professors here like to give breath and color to the people and characters of the past. They no longer live on a page, but almost come to life as they describe them. |

In three sentences | mary hardin-baylor is an exceptional school with passionate teachers and wonderful students. the university and staff base their teachings on faith-based learning. umhb is a great environment to grow as a student and a constructive member of society. |
Tips for prospective students | umhb is a great university to grow and learn. it is a private university that is faith-based in every aspect of the school. the teachers and students are extremely friendly and make you feel at home within the first week of coming to the university. i would suggest being financially prepared before coming here so you can focus on your studies instead of where the money will come from. the university is tough and you will spend many hours and long nights in the library but it is all worth it. |
Academic Rigor | the classes at umhb are tough and push you to think differently but every class i have taken has prepared me to start my career and to become successful. the resources needed to succeed are there and are easily assessable from the librarians to help with a lengthy research paper to the free math clinics all offered at convenient hours. |
Food and Dining | the food at the university of mary hardin-baylor is much like every other university. it's pretty much hit or miss. the cafe in the student center has great breakfast burritos and burgers and there is also a taco side with great chicken quesadillas but the menu is not very long so the food can get boring pretty quick. there is a dining hall but i've actually never ate there. i've heard that breakfast is pretty good there but lunch and dinner are not. |
What to do for fun | fun things are always planned around campus life. every holiday is celebrated here and sports games are a big thing on campus. we have a great theater program that put on a couple of productions a year. there is also different nights celebrated like indian food night, pizza night, cru night. the campus life writes all the reminders on the sidewalks in front of all the main buildings so you won't miss a thing. it is not hard to jump in and join. |
Bang for the buck | umhb is expensive but compared to other private schools its relatively low. the scholarship office did a great job finding me everything they could and i ended up paying less than i would at a public university. also, the university offers just about everything. they have a gym on campus, a fantastic library, tons of computer rooms and a lot of campus life events that are totally free. also, the level of education i am receiving is worth every penny. i have not encountered a teacher that doesn't care and hasn't been willing to put in their all for me to succeed. |

Great for these types of students | umhb offers a wide variety of academic programs. this is a christian-based school so you are required to go to chapel and take religion courses. if you are already religious this is a great school to grow as a christian. i think this school would be great for any type of student but especially students who are wanting to go to a smaller school. you know the majority of the student body pretty fast thanks to the small number of students allowed in. |
Clubs and Activities | there is a club or activity for just about everything you would want to be involved in. there are clubs for nursing students, foreign language students, prospective teachers and many more academic programs. there are christian clubs to study the bible, fellowship and there is one that cooks dinner every wednesday for everyone to come and fellowship. |

In three sentences | The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor can be described as a tight knit community. There is a diverse range of people here with all sorts of backgrounds so making friends is very easy. The academics are excellent, the professors are all super helpful, and there is a wide range of student organizations and clubs to be involved in; thus making Mary Hardin-Baylor a unique university that you could call home. |
Tips for prospective students | I would advise you prospective students to come to one of the Preview Weekends! You get to stay in a dorm with a current freshman so you really get to experience the things that you would experience in your first semester at UMHB. I would also encourage you to try to visit during a game weekend for football or other sports so you can experience the school spirit. Ask your admissions counselors lots of questions! They will answer anything and everything to make sure that you are able to make the best decision possible. |
Academic Rigor | Most of the classes are challenging, but not so difficult that you cannot succeed. They make it possible for you to do work, maintain good grades, and still maintain an exiting social life. The professors truly care about you and will help you with anything. If you are having problems understanding things in class they will help you individually during their office hours, and there are free tutors available through the Center of Academic Excellence! |
Dorm Life | There are 5 different girls dormitories and 3 different boys dorms. The girls have a lot as options as far as how many people they want to room with and whether or not that want a private or public bath. The boys have some of the same options but not as many as the girls do. The dorms feel like communities. At the beginning of the semester, we had Hall Wars to help us all get to know each other. Each dorm holds different fun events each weekend and the lobbies all have at least on TV and a pool table. The RA's are super nice and will help you with whatever you need no matter what time. They take the time to get to know you! |
Food and Dining | Our university just opened a NEW student union this semester! Inside of it is an amazing cafeteria which is loads better than the previous Hardy Hall. They have a wide range of options such as a pizza bar, salad bar, sandwich bar, soups, burgers, stir fry, and some sort of home style choice at each meal! Also some days, there is a taco bar or wing bar, and in the mornings their is an omelet bar and waffle bar. The people who work in the cafeteria take the time to ask about your day and make sure that your dining experience is as best as it can be. Also, the Union has a Starbucks, 1845 Grill and Chick-fil-a inside in which students can use their Dining Dollars to eat at as well. |
What to do for fun | There are TONS of things to do for fun! If you like to plan events and be creative in finding fun things for other students to do, the Campus Activities Board is for you. If you like sports and other things, the campus rec and gym are open till 11pm each night and there are various intramural seasons that go on all year! If you like to be involved in campus ministries, there is the BSM, Wednesday night bible studies, and worship in the Quad. Our student union has an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One upstairs as well as a shuffle board, giant iPad like tables, and couches for you to lounge in with your friends. There are different fun events that go on like Own the Night, an event that happens every other Thursday night where we dance the night away to all sorts of music! There are hammocks and swings around campus to sit and read in. There are math clubs, chemistry clubs, and all sorts of things! There is never a dull day on campus! |
Bang for the buck | While the university can be very expensive, there is financial aid available for those who seek it out. They have a wide range of academic scholarships as well as need-based scholarships. But the cost is worth every penny. You get the highest quality of academic service: free tutors, smaller classes, and professors that go out of their way to ensure that you succeed. You get a huge variety of campus activities all for FREE! The dorm life is amazing as well as the food. And most importantly you are able to make lasting relationships as you come along side your fellow classmates in your journey towards graduation. Don't let money deter you from applying! You will not regret your decision! |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | There is the smokers circle: a clearing in the grass with benches for those who smoke. The circle is located exactly 50-ft within several of the dorms; thus, making it a perfect spot for those who care to smoke. Luther Memorial is located in a field. The memorial represents one of the first dormitories that burned down many years ago. The amazing thing is that every single girl made it out of there alive without being hurt! What' even more ironic is that during homecoming week, the school lights the letters UMHB on fire over the pillars which once burned down all those years ago. Burt Pond is another location on campus that carries it superstitious belief. It is said that if a boyfriend and girlfriend walk around the pond 3 times while holding hands, they will get married. There are rumors that Presser Hall, the music building, is haunted by the ghost of a girl who committed suicide their many years ago. They claim that she will play the piano, but no one is brave enough to stay late enough to see if the claims are true. There are lots of other traditions and locations on campus that would take ages to share! That's what makes UMHB such a great place! |
Great for these types of students | UMHB is great for students who want to go to a college where they are not just a number, a place where they can thrive and grow. UMHB is a great place for students who desire to grow in their leadership abilities. The university prides itself on being s student-orientated, student-led campus! UMHB is a great place for someone who wants to have a wide variety of different activities to participate in. It is also a great place for those who are wanting to grow more in their Christian faith or become involved in missions. It's great for someone who wants to go to a university that will feel like home, where they can know a lot of people and now get lost in the crowd. |

For the musically inclined, there are various bands, choirs, and orchestras, the most popular being the Black Shirt Cru Spirit Band which plays at all of the football games. |
Greek Life | There is no greek life on campus, but that doesn't mean that we don't know how to have fun and there are tons of other clubs available on campus. |
Campus Safety | The campus police patrol campus 24/7. They send out alerts to students of suspicious activity to ensure our safety. If you feel uncomfortable walking to your dorm after an event, they will escort you to be sure you are safe. They will let you in your building if you forget your key or Cru Card, they will jump your car, and they do everything in their power to keep you feeling secure. |

In three sentences | Attending the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is greatest decision I have ever made. Everyone is nice and thoughtful, the professors actually care about you, plus a brand new football stadium makes it even better. My life has been so much better since I've started here at UMHB. |
Tips for prospective students | If you're on the edge about coming here, just say yes already! If you think Mary Hardin-Baylor is some uptight, Baptist school, you're wrong. There has been so much stuff to do here that I can hardly keep up with all the activities. If you miss an activity, there are more to follow, trust me. |
Academic Rigor | Since I am a freshmen, my classes are well laid back and not that hard so far. The teachers are always willing to help if you have questions and the tutoring is free. I'm sure once I start taking the courses I need that goes toward my major, it will become pretty intense but nothing I couldn't handle. |
Dorm Life | If you live in the dorms, get to know your room mate before attending the school, if you can. It makes the first few days living together less awkward and you will already know at least one person there. You can also plan before hand on how you want the room to be. The dorm life here at UMHB is amazingly fun. The RA's always have something for us to do to keep us from becoming stressed out about our classes. |
Food and Dining | Hardy Dining hall is where most of the students go to eat, if not off campus. Hardy has a sub station for lunch and dinner and an omelet station for breakfast. The Crusader Cafe is a great hangout spot where most of us go to study or for their Mexican dishes. We have a new sub being built that will come with a Chik-Fil-A, Starbucks, and many more accommodations. |
What to do for fun | There's is so much to do for fun here on campus. There's FYC (First Year Council), CAB (Campus Activities Board), and BSM (Baptist Student Ministry). Each of these groups are in charge of Stunt Night, which is a homecoming tradition where students from each class put on a 10 minute show. We have the Miss MHB pageant where girls compete to win scholarship money. We also have the Cru Knights pageant for the guys. Football games are the most fun especially since we just opened our brand new football stadium. Seeing everyone there dressed in their purple, white, and gold showing school spirit really is a sight to see. |
Bang for the buck | When I decided to make UMHB my new home, I thought it was all going to be about studying and going to church. Now that I'm here I can say that I was wrong to assume that because coming here was more than I expected it to be. There's so much to do on campus and in the community. They never run out of things for us students to get involved in. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | This year we've started the traditions walk where every class starts at a different location on campus and we all march together to the crusader statue in front of the stadium. We are also starting a new tradition with a dance the student body does at every home football game. |
Great for these types of students | If you really like playing sports but can't be on the college team, intramural sports are the best thing to do. If you like volunteering around town, UMHB has a Reaching Out opportunity once every semester. |
Clubs and Activities | The Couch Cru is amazing at home football games. They sit on the visiting side of the field and support our team in the middle of the opponents' fans. |
Greek Life | Sorry, UMHB doesn't have Greek Life on campus but there are some you can join off campus. |
Campus Safety | On all the tours I've been on when I was looking at colleges, I have never seen one quite as safe as the campus here. The campus police are always driving around and checking in on dorms and buildings for security purposes. |

In three sentences | I have attended this college 2 years to date, and I love it! The campus is small enough where you don't feel lost or out of place, but big enough to where you still feel like you are part of an exclusive community. The staff on campus (teachers, faculty, etc.) are so friendly, and when accepted, I received LOTS of financial aid. |
Tips for prospective students | Take a tour of the campus! When I went to take a tour, that was when I fell in love with the campus. Make sure, if you are transferring in credits, that your credits will actually go towards your intended major and that the university will accept them. |
Academic Rigor | This university prides itself on having top-notch professors who really know the material they are teaching. Not only do the professors know their subjects well, but every single professor I've ever had has taken an eager interest in the success of their students. They make themselves accessible so that you can fully learn the material. |
Dorm Life | Dorm life is great! I loved the dorm I stayed in, and you have your own mini community within each dorm. The dorm directors and RA's are always really nice and helpful. |
Food and Dining | The food when I first attended UMHB was, I'll be honest, TERRIBLE. But very shortly after my first semester there, they installed a feedback system where in the cafeteria there was a box where students could place comments on the food in a box. In just a few months, the food quality greatly increased. The SUB, which is separate has great food. And the new student union building which should be finished in the fall of 2013 will feature a Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks, or so we've been told. |
What to do for fun | Lots of students love going to the Belton Dam and other nature parks surrounding the lake. We have a movie theatre right down the street from the school, and several malls in the surrounding area. Belton and Temple may be small cities, but you can find fun stuff to do. |
Bang for the buck | UMHB is an expensive university, however, they accommodate for this by giving lots of financial aid to incoming students. The university also puts the money to good use by constantly improving the facilities students use on campus, like the new stadium and student union building being constructed that will be completed by the fall of 2013, and the new field house for athletes. The campus always looks beautiful due to a dedicated gardening staff. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | There is a great tradition on campus called Running Man, which is a game played at nighttime and across the whole campus. We also have great campus events throughout the year, like Stunt Night, which is a night full of each class performing funny skits. There is also a Miss UMHB Pageant and a Crusader Knights contest each year. |
Great for these types of students | UMHB is really great for any kind of student in my opinion. The only students that would not be happy at UMHB are students looking forward to Greek life. UMHB has no sororities or fraternities on campus, but they make up for it with all the clubs and organizations on campus. |
Clubs and Activities | There are many clubs on campus, separated by categories. There are community service organizations, like ASTRA and The Rotaract Club of UMHB. There are academic organizations like the Nurses Student Association, Delta Psi Theta (Math Club, not a fraternity), and other specific academic interest clubs. There are even special interest clubs like the Campus Activities Board, Film Cru, and the Residence Hall Association. There are also leadership clubs, such as University Ambassadors, Student Government Association, and First Year Council. |
Greek Life | There is no Greek life at UMHB aside from the Greek academic clubs. |
Campus Safety | I always feel extremely safe at school. First of all, Belton has a low crime rate. Second of all, the police staff on campus is friendly and always available. There are emergency poles located near residence halls and around campus so that in case of an emergency you can go to the pole and contact the police immediately. |
