Am learning a lot | My classes are pretty easy! Though I am learning a lot of new topics. It is like a continuation from what I learned in high school! But classes are more fun and there is a lot more down time. |
Am enjoying being here | I love Emporia! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I feel as though it is almost a big family even though it's a large college campus. Everyone smiles when they walk by. Teachers are helpful and classes are not bigger than forty if even twenty. The school really prepares and cares about their students. The freshman swarm program really helped me to become outgoing and meet new people. A great icebreaker! The city of Emporia is also great for college students, some shopping and some unique and great places to eat. It's so much fun to go out with friends and spend a night out on the town. There are many places to volunteer or be apart of. I volunteer with a girl scout troop which is lots of fun and it doesn't take away from my school work or down time. Big Brothers big sisters and youthfriends are always happy to have college students help out and it's a great program to add to a resume. Emporia is the best! Go Hornets! |
Bang for the buck | The tuition and prices are a little more expensive than I had hoped but, I don't regret spending the money it is worth it! |
Tips for prospective students | If you are attending Emporia than get ready to meet some great people! I am not sure how Emporia is based on other colleges, but if you want to have smaller class sizes, get to know people in your classes and your teacher, and have a small college town atmosphere than Emporia is for you! There are a lot of on campus activities and things to get involved in. I am involved in my Towers Complex government and plan awesome FREE activities in my residence hall. There are so many activities such as movie on the lawn. The town also has fun activities such as when they shut down commercial street and all the college students get free food and prizes. We have smore cookouts and there are always things to win or do in the memorial union. There's many clubs such as UMC or KNEA which is a teachers club I am involved in. I think the best choice I ever made was to stop following my friends choice for college and look for myself. Although I did not know anyone attending Emporia from my high school, that didn't stop me! I love it, I feel like I am actually on my own and not running with the crowd any longer. Choosing a college was one of my hardest decisions and Emporia was one of the colleges I thought I would never attend. Come to find out, it was my best choice I ever made and I am so happy I did. Don't take it from me though, maybe Emporia isn't for you. Though what ever you choose make sure you choose the college that's best for you not what anyone else says or because someone you know is going there. It's your future take the bull by the horns and make the best change of your life! Go Hornets! |
Great for these types of students | Students who like small classes, like to get to know classmates and teacher, like small college towns. However it may sound like everything is smaller in Emporia but we have some big fun! It's not what you think, Emporia is so much more than meets the eye! |

Am learning a lot | Attending Emporia State university has defiantely improved my learning abilities. The programs they offer to help aid in studying and learning are endless. You have every chance in the world to learn here at Emporia State. When I came to college I had a 2.8 After just one year here I now have a 3.52. The classes are fair in size, therefore you have more one on one time with your professors leaving you in a better enviroment to pick up and retain the material. If you have problems learning Emporia State is The school with the utilities to help u utilize your skills and better yourself. |
Am enjoying being here | As far as enjoyment goes I have never been happier in a town. The people of Emporia are friendly and outgoing. The nightlife is awesome. Coles, beer 30, and despoes just to name a few are great places to hangout during the weekend. As a freshman The dorms are the place to be, you can get a suite or a two person room. living in the dorms is like a big party all your friends are a few steps away. The campus is beautiful. You will never have a dull moment at Emporia state university |
Bang for the buck | The tution cost is relatively low compared to the level of teaching you will recieve. Emporia State university is among the top best teaching schools in the nation. Allowing for more bang for your buck. Taking advantage of the low prices to attend will land you in great classes allowing you to get everything you need to excel. |
Tips for prospective students | If you plan on attending Emporia State University you will have to attend swarm. Swarm is a very well organized freshman orentation which will allow you to view the campus and get a feel for the place. They will inform you on everything you need to know. As a freshman if you will be living in the dorms bring plenty of soap and towels. |
Great for these types of students | If you love a having a good time, but at the same time learning and taking care of business this is the place for you. |

In three sentences | Emporia is a great university that allows students to get involved in the community. It has a great learning environment. Kids will feel right at home once attending. |
Tips for prospective students | Make sure you know where the tutoring centers are, don't be afraid to ask for help and explore new classes. |
Academic Rigor | The staff wants you to do well and succeed |
Dorm Life | I have a very fun out going floor that always makes me feel welcome. There are many dorm activities that allow you to interact and meet new people. |
Food and Dining | After a while the dinning on campus becomes the same and you get tired of it. Not many choices. |
What to do for fun | It is best to just hang out with friends. Emporia isn't to far from Kansas city, Wichita, and Topeka if you are looking for things to do. |
Bang for the buck | With Flat rate tuition students can take as many classes as they want for one flat rate. It makes it nice if you take a lot of credit hours. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | Wooster lake is a nice area with lots of trees and fresh air. The freshman dorms also hold competitions against floors for fun prizes. |
Great for these types of students | Business or education majors looking for a smaller university with good classes. |
Clubs and Activities | Emporia has a large variety of clubs. Everyone can find something that interest them. |
Greek Life | I am not a member. I hear some people like it and others don't. |
Campus Safety | Campus safety is about average. Campus police will escort you available upon request. This is used a lot at night when students don't want to walk alone. |

Am learning a lot | The teachers are very explanatory. When I was in high school, I took advanced courses, so I'm taking classes that I've sorta already taken right now (I've only been here a semester), but I'm still learning more about them and remembering things better. The teachers are also very willing to help outside of class, and work with your schedule to do it. Also, the majority of the teachers relate to the students very well and use teaching techniques that will keep your attention. |
Am enjoying being here | To be concise, I am having the time of my life right now. I'm learning new things, I'm active in several clubs, I am meeting awesome people, and have a great educational program. It's so nice having the independence of being in the dorms also, but not having to worry about bills like you would have living in a house or apartment. |
Bang for the buck | It is worth every penny. For a state university, it is relatively cheap also. |
Tips for prospective students | Try to live in the Towers Complex. They're a bit more expensive than the Singular/Trussler Complex, but that's because they were recently renovated. They have floor lobbies so it allows you to be social and meet loads of people. Also, don't get the Unlimited Meal Plan. The cafeteria food isn't that great, so even though it's the best deal, you probably won't want to go there enough to make it worth the price. |
Great for these types of students | Anyone who is from a mid-sized or small school will enjoy Emporia State. Even in my large lecture classes, my teachers know my name and take initiative to answer questions from everyone. It is a small campus, so you're able to walk from once side to another in less than ten minutes. You see the same people every day, and people recognize you and say hi, so it's really nice in the aspect of not being surrounded by thousands of strangers like you would have in a bigger school. |

In three sentences | If you're looking for a school that has the top programs in all its degrees, genuinely looks out for its students, and offers a lot of opportunities, Emporia is for you. It's a great transition school. Everyone there is positive, helpful and wants you to succeed! |
Dorm Life | I love dorm life! Emporia has residential communities for education and business majors. I'm in the business community and it's awesome! We are able to work together in business classes and also make connections for our major that we'll have for our remaining time here. There is always something going on in the dorms, there are sinks in every dorm, ping pong tables, a tv on every floor. They're very nice rooms, and the activities they plan are so much fun! |
Food and Dining | There's vegetarian options, although a little limited. Always pasta, salad, pizza, sandwhiches, dessert, and grill and main course options. There's also hex, which you get a certain amount of money to spend in and there's a subway, chipolte, and a few other options there. Finally there's a Starbucks with those same 'dining dollars'. |
Great for these types of students | It's great for students who come from small schools who are ready to be in a bigger environment. I've noticed that kids from bigger high school's struggle with how small the town is. If you are negative and don't like to participate this is not the school for you. It is very positive and welcoming all around |
Bang for the buck | ESU gave me enough scholarships that I haven't had to pay for college yet. There's always free events and free stuff to do, te education is solid, and it's a great place to be. It's worth every penny, and is one of the cheapest schools in the Midwest. Considering they have such awesome business, education, nursing, theatre, and other programs, it's a great value. |
Tips for prospective students | Put your best foot forward and don't be afraid to try something new Emporia is just a great place to be. |
Greek Life | I am in Greek life and I love it. It's not your typical sorority or fraternity life, they have a very strict no hazing policy and they judge on your personality when deciding new members rather than your looks I have been very pleased and proud to be a part of the Greek life here. They are all very positive and supportive of one another and work together to bring good to the campus. |
Clubs and Activities | There are a ton of activities for every sort of kid. There's even a Nerf gun club. And it's very very easy to start your own club if you don't like any of the ones on campus. |
Academic Rigor | So far I've only taken general ed classes with one major requirement. However, they like to spread out your gen eds over four years so you're not buried with major requirements and can also change your major more easily if you decide you don't like the classes you're taking. The teachers really work with you if you put in the effort. |
What to do for fun | There's something all the time of you look hard enough! Emporia has a zoo, nature walks, muesuems, a small mall and a movie theatre. The college itself always has events like the tye dye runs and finals week carnivals. The Main Street also has events to try to get you involved! If you can't find something to do you're not trying hard enough! |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | There's the 'stinger's up' hand sign, and then there is the experience which is an orientation event during the summer and then there's the orientation which is just a whole bunch of fun activities. Other than that I can't think of anything weird besides there's one arch you're not supposed to walk under. |
Campus Safety | People say you're not supposed to walk alone at dark on campus but the worst I've received or if you catcalls I feel very safe at Emporia. If you don't feel safe there are the blue lights everywhere on campus to be sure that you are safe and police and safety is right next to the freshman dorms. The police will even come help you with a flat tire or any other type of trouble even if you're Across town. |

In three sentences | Emporia is the perfect school for me; it's a small town environment with a lot of care for their students and amazing programs. I can't wait to go and get my degree there, especially with the best art therapy program! Emporia hasn't failed my expectations. |
Academic Rigor | The school meets very high standards and with a low student to teacher ratio, it's not hard to get the care you need. |
Dorm Life | I've heard the dorms are really nice. |
Food and Dining | the food doesn't sound the greatest, but ramen and starbucks are good. |

In three sentences | Emporia State has a friendly, inviting and warm atmosphere about it. The professors and advisers care about you and the teacher's college is full of some of the most kind and understanding people you will ever meet. I loved it here, and was said to leave the college I had grown to love. |
Tips for prospective students | Check with your adviser before enrolling in classes , you don't want to be a senior in a general education class because you enrolled yourself wrong! |
Academic Rigor | The Teacher's College was tough. You have to work really hard to get through , but it is all worth it in the end! General education classes are a joke, but I'm sure they are at every college. |
Dorm Life | The freshman dorms were alright, they are plenty nice and there was always lots to do! However, the upper class dorms are awful. They are not well taken care of and the people are a bit strange... get an apartment after freshman year! If you budget right, it will actually SAVE you money! |
Food and Dining | Honestly, Emporia only gets a 4 because of La Hacienda and Pizza Ranch. La Ha , as the college kids call it, has amazing and cheap Mexican food! Pizza Ranch has good Pizza and they have fried chicken and mashed potatoes too! A great buffet to go to, and they offer student discounts! |
What to do for fun | Bar scene is pretty much it. |
Bang for the buck | Flat rate tuition is THE BOMB! |
Great for these types of students | Good party school, good academic school , good for small town people! Not a large town, so unless you had small town experience , you would hate Emporia if you are from a large city. |
Clubs and Activities | Good bar scene, movies are pretty cheap! |
Campus Safety | Very safe environment, always police and safety around (and parking guys! Always check your meter and pay your tickets... boots on your car are embarrassing , it's a small enough place where everyone knows your car!) |

In three sentences | Teachers are always willing to help students inside and outside of class time, they want to see them succeed. Beautiful, spacious campus with tons of clubs and groups to get involved with. Great athletics program, the students are encouraged to stay on top of their grades and their coaches are involved in their academic success. |
Tips for prospective students | Come to Emporia State!!! Get involved in any and every club. They also have fun courses to take and all kinds of activities year around to enjoy. |
Academic Rigor | Everyone succeeds with the help of their instructors, faculty, and other students. Everyone was you to succeed and accomplish your dreams! |
Dorm Life | I've never lived in the dorms but everyone talks about how they love the dorms. Free laundry! |
Food and Dining | I have only ate in the cafe a couple times but it was excellent food. There are so many items to choose from and it's pretty cheap. |
What to do for fun | Go to athletic events, join clubs, make new friends and hang out. There is endless fun here at ESU! |
Clubs and Activities | There is a club for about every major and just other random clubs. If you can think of it, it is probably already a club and if not, start your own! |
Greek Life | We have a handful of fraternities and sororities at ESU. All of them help out a great deal with the activities the college hosts and they host a lot of their own events. They are every active within the college. |
Campus Safety | Just the feel of the campus is safe. We do however have 911-Help police poles all over campus if anyone ever does think their safety is in jeopardy. |
