Fire Science/Fire-fighting

Most people run away from danger. First responders run right toward it to save lives and minimize damage. If you're interested in helping others and embarking on a rewarding career, consider majoring in fire science or fire-fighting. A program in fire science/fire-fighting focuses on fire and how to manage it. The curriculum covers a number of topics, including instruction in fire chemistry and physics, combustible materials, building construction, fire codes and related laws, fire hydraulics, fire command, fire prevention/inspection, fire protection systems, fire suppression systems, fire/arson investigation, occupational safety, equipment operation, emergency medicine, and communications. Courses will take place in a few different settings. Theoretical classes might have a typical lecture format, while more practical classes may take place in a lab or in the field. You can rest assured you'll have plenty of hands-on instruction and gain experience dealing events typical to what you'll see in the field after graduation. Most graduates find work as firefighters, but others may further their education and become forensic scientists, construction and building inspectors, fire inspectors, or work in the nonprofit field.
