In three sentences | Is a very rigorous school that will prepare students for their role in the military or maritime service. There is no other school like this, with regards to traditions and experiences. Even though your time here will be rough and studious it is well worth it. |
Academic Rigor | One of the toughest higher level institutions. Offers a difficult Engineering program that is geared towards sailing in the US Merchant Fleet. Will prepare students adequately for a career in the Merchant Marine. One entire year will be spent by the students out at sea on commercial ships working in the actual industry. The other three years the students are on a trimester system and usually average 18 credits during each trimester. |
Dorm Life | Dorm life is great, considering you get four straight years of it. There is no alternative living accommodations. Because all of your time is spent in the dorms with the exception of sea year the students grow fond of each other. One problem of the dorm life is the freshman are in charge of cleaning the facilities, this does not always go over to well. |
Food and Dining | Not the worst food on the planet but could most certainly use some work. Students are offered one entree for lunch and two for dinner. Because of the lack of choices students often dislike the food and dining offered here. |
What to do for fun | Being a Division three school we have a multitude of sports events to watch on the weekend. With the schools location on Long Island, NY trips to NYC are frequent and exciting. The school has a sailing program where students participated in daily sailing events. Long Island has many attractions that accommodate students during the weekends. |
Bang for the buck | Considering the school is a Federal Academy and the cost to the students is under $5,000 the bang for the buck is tremendous here. The education is mostly free based on a service obligation of all the students. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | Each student at the Merchant Marine Academy will spend one year at sea working as a cadet on a commercial or military ship. This experience will bring the students around the world. Most students visit 15 different countries throughout there time here. Not to mention the great work experience gained during this year spent out at sea. |
Great for these types of students | If you are a hard working, intelligent, athletic person who wants to study Engineering or Logistics and Inter modal Transportation then this is the school for you. Being a Federal Academy the tuition is near free and the experiences are great. |
Clubs and Activities | The school is a Division 3 school and offers all the normals sports in addition to sailing and power boats. In addition to athletics this school has some of the most clubs of any school that I know of. Clubs including: fencing, investment, military, sports, EMT, eagle scouts and many more. |
Greek Life | Every student on campus is automatically enrolled in the Kings Point fraternity/sorority which is Kappa Pi Sigma. This is a very unique and awesome way of bonding a group of people together. |
Campus Safety | Being a Federal Academy, all personal are subject to military service upon completion of the school so most people are physically fit and morally sound. Lying, Cheating and Stealing rarely occur due to the honor code. In addition the school has a campus police force and security guards at the gates. |

Tips for prospective students | None that I can give sorry! |
