The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a service academy based in the suburban town of Kings Point, New York. All students enter the school as “plebe candidates” and must complete an intense regimen of physical training, customs, drills, and ceremonies. A majority of tuition and living expenses for students are paid for by the federal government. After graduation, students have the option to work as active duty officers in any branch of the US military or as civilians in the maritime industry.
