Am learning a lot
Upon coming here in the fall of 2009, I never anticipated learning as much as I am now. One nice thing about this school is that all of your courses relate in some way. I found myself learning the same concepts, from different perspectives which will help me when I become a teacher.
Am enjoying being here
Our campus offers some of the best events around. If you live on campus be sure to check out the events for ARHS (Association for Residence Hall Students), just recently they offered a free bowling and laser tag trip at no expense to the students!

Another organization on campus is UPB (University Programming Board), which hosts many events on campus. They bring in speakers, singers, fun events, and lots of free activities to participate in.

Every weekend you can look forward to a movie viewing in Watson Hall and the ATS building.
Bang for the buck
The new dorms are absolutely worth every penny. You are able to have your own room or if you wish to share you can! The beauty about them is that you do not have to share a bathroom with more than 1 other person. This makes it a lot more convenient to plan schedules.

The meal plans are also very flexible for the needs of the students. The campus offers flex dollars, meal swipes, and Rock Dollars. Rock Dollars are also accepted at our local Giant Eagle (grocery store) and the restaurants on Main Street.
Tips for prospective students
We get a lot of rain here at Slippery Rock, so bring an umbrella. Girls, do not buy the cute umbrellas, they do not hold up! Instead buy an umbrella that will be sturdy and withstand the wind and rain our region offers.

Before choosing classes, talk to people living around you to hear about professors that they have had and what professors may suit your needs as a student.
Great for these types of students
Everywhere you go, you seem to know someone! This campus is great for students looking to have the best college career they could possibly imagine. From making friends to making A's, you will love Slippery Rock University!

Am learning a lot
I am learning a lot! Slippery Rock is a great school with an even better learning environment. I love it here at the Rock. Teachers definitely challenge their students, but in the end you actually learn good information that you didn't previously know.
Am enjoying being here
I LOVE SRU. It's the best school to be at. It's a beautiful community to be a part. I love how there is always fun events going on on and off campus.
Bang for the buck
Yes, it's actually a affordable school for a college! I'm out of state and it's cheaper then some school's in my state.
Tips for prospective students
Make the best of your experience. You won't be treated like a baby while your here, but there will always be someone there for you. It's basically what you make it.
Great for these types of students
Outgoing, fun, mature, and creative student's that wants to make new friends and take leadership positions.

Slippery Rock has a beautiful, safe campus, as well as a friendly student body and great academic programs. About 8-9,000 students undergraduates attend SRU, which makes the school just big enough that you can see a new person everyday, but still have a few familiar faces in the crowd. The town is small, and there isn't much to do on the weekends, but the school is located about 15 minutes away from the Grove City shopping outlets and Morraine State Park, so it's not impossible to find something to do.
Tips for prospective students
If you're considering Slippery Rock, take the location into consideration. If a semi-rural campus is what you're looking for, great! If not, please know that SRU is not in a heavily populated or urban area, and you may find yourself extremely bored at times. Aside from that, the academic programs are great, the class sizes are reasonable, and the professors and advisors are always more than willing to help students be successful. There are dozens of academic and non-academic clubs to join, and Slippery Rock offers a club or program for just about any interest.
Academic Rigor
The classes at SRU can be pretty challenging, depending on the subject. Personally, I have found that the liberal studies courses are very manageable and it is not difficult to receive an A. As far as the science and math classes go, however, there is much more effort required and the information is at a heightened difficulty. The professors make themselves easy to reach, though, and tutoring is available so you can receive help if you need it.
Dorm Life
Slippery Rock recently built 5 new residence halls, which include AC and semi-private bathrooms. Compared to other schools, the dorms are like hotel suites. Anything you could think of is available to you: laundry, food, computers, printers, and much more. Living in the new residence halls is quite a luxury, and it makes for a great first-year experience. Two traditional residence halls also exist, and they have communal bathrooms. However, I have heard great things about these dorms too. They don't have all the luxury of the new residence halls, but they are maintained well and still make for a pleasant experience.
Food and Dining
There are 4 places on-campus to get food: Wisenfluh, Boozel, Rocky's, and Quaker Steak n' Lube. The food, in general, is pretty good. A variety of healthy foods are available, as well as different types of food. Boozel is the only dining hall that isn't great. The rest are delicious!
What to do for fun
The Grove City Outlets are 15 minutes down the road, as well as Morraine State Park. However, if you don't have a car, there isn't much to do. Most students just walk to Main Street and get lunch or dinner at a local restaurant on the weekends.
Bang for the buck
Slippery Rock is very affordable, and so far, I feel that I am getting a quality education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
SRU has a lot of traditions. There are 4 particularly popular ones: green and white Friday, the hello tradition, rub the rock, and the alma mater and fight song. Once the new students arrive on campus, they immediately learn about all of these traditions and are initiated into the SRU student body.
Campus Safety
Our campus is very safe. SRU uses the emergency blue light system, and campus police are always around to ensure the safety of students, especially on nights and weekends.

Tips for prospective students
Take you classes seriously and work hard. Talk with other students and gain perspective on your future professors. Join clubs and meet people who share your interests.
Academic Rigor
Many of the classes are hard, but easy when you work hard. The professors expect the best out of their students. Many professors are amazing, but some seem to not care about their students.
Dorm Life
The dorms are very nice. Each is equipped with a full kitchen and each floor has their own washer and dryer. The rooms are nice and their are rooms around to provide neighbors. The buildings are secure and make everyone feel safe.
Food and Dining
We have many options on and off campus for food. Unfortunately the dining hall does not always have the best food. The off campus options are close fast food places and local restaurants.
What to do for fun
My friends and I have movie nights in the dorms. We have had dinners using the full kitchen area. We have also gone into town and enjoyed food from the local restaurants. The students government association showed a new movie every weekend in our student center. Lastly, many students attend the sporting events to cheer on our athletes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
It is believed that a few of the buildings are haunted. However, the ghosts are protecting those who are in the buildings. The ghost in our traditional dorm building protects the people that live there. The ghost of the theater protects the shows that are performed there.
We have the tradition of rubbing the rocks that our near the quad because they bring luck. There is a specific rock for each year. The freshman rock is a slab without any shape to it. The sophomore rock is more jagged but taking on a round shape. The junior rock is less jagged and talking on an even round shape. The senior rock is smooth and polished. The rocks symbolize our journey here.
Campus Safety
The campus is safe. There are blue safety lights that students can press and campus police will come to help them. We all have the number for campus police and can call them if we are scared to walk back to our dorms alone. The dorms are also secure because only people that live there can open the doors and anyone bringing a person that doesn't live there has to sign them in.

Am learning a lot
I absolutely love Slippery Rock. The transition from high school to college is hard on anyone but the teachers at Slippery Rock really make the transition easy. Every teacher I've had has really gone the extra mile. If I'm not understanding something in class I go to their office hours and every professor so far has sat me down and explained the topic to me. The curriculum for my major is tough and very demanding but the teachers really do make a difference between doing well and understanding something and not understanding something. The class sizes are also between 25 and 35 students, which allows the teachers to give each student equal attention.
Am enjoying being here
Freshman are allowed to have cars on campus but, honestly, there is no need. There is always something to do on campus, and if you don't feel like staying on campus there is plenty of things to do within walking distance. I love being on campus at Slippery Rock. I only live half an hour from the university itself but i rarely go home on weekends. Another great aspect is that Slippery Rock has learning clusters for the freshman class. The learning cluster means that you have most of your classes with the same group of about 30 students in your major. This is an awesome way to get to know your peers and it gives Slippery Rock a small school feel. They also have living learning communities you can apply to be in. These living learning communities make it so you can live on the same floor with other students in your major. It is an awesome aspect of Slippery Rock because if you don't understand your homework you've got a floor full of people that can help you!
Bang for the buck
Your money is well spent at Slippery Rock. They have different meal plans to fit every person's needs. They also have options for flex that can be spent anywhere on campus and a system called Rock Dollars which is like a pre paid credit card. It can be used anywhere on campus and also at select places in the actual town. Including the Subway, McDonalds, Giant Eagle, Tattoo places and many other shops in town.
Tips for prospective students
When choosing classes make sure you either talk to other people which teacher is the best for the subject you would be taking or use ratemyprofessor.com. Slippery Rock gets alot of rain so be prepared at all times, even when the day may start out sunny. Get involved on campus somehow! Whether it be a club or intramural sports getting involved is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. When packing your things to move into the dorm DO NOT OVERPACK. Freshman definitely have a tendancy to bring everything they own, girls especially. You'll find out you do not need as much as you think you do.
Great for these types of students
This school is great for students wanting to go to a large school with a small school feel. It's also great for students interested in greek life.

Will learn a lot
This school is accredited and known for its Education program. The teachers are highly ranked and reviewed very well on ratemyprofessor.com. Everyone that I have talked to about classes say that they are hard but worth it because of how much you take from the classes. I feel like I will have a great classroom experience while attending Slippery Rock.
Will enjoy being here
The school has so much to offer. There are so many ways to get involved and I can not wait to get my foot in the door. I will meet so many people from around the world and even have some friends from home. Everyone is so friendly! There is even a tradition that every passing person says hello!
Bang for the buck
A great school for little cost. School costs can really creep up on you but Slippery Rock offers several opportunities to make money. They have so many on campus jobs and financial help.
Tips for prospective students
Get your application in early and do not stress out about school. Do what makes you happy in life. If you don't like your major you do not have to keep it. Slippery Rock understands that and makes it very easy to switch to another major.

Academic Rigor
Classes in college need to be taken seriously; make sure you study. The best way to know you have learned something is to own the content. Be able to apply what you have learned in class in everyday life or conversation.
Dorm Life
I never wanted to live in a dorm before I went to college but I absolutely love it. I am forming friendships that will last forever. Slippery Rock has Living Learning Communities one can live in that are related to your major; these communities really create an awesome opportunity for friendships and encompassing yourself in your major.
Food and Dining
Starbucks, Weisenfluh, and Quaker Steak and Lube are my three favorite places to eat on campus. Our dining hall, Boozel, is also very nice and accommodating to the students. I am a student with food allergies and I completely back the food and dining on campus.
What to do for fun
College at Slippery Rock in its entirety is fun! With our hello tradition, you never have trouble making new friends to go see free movies with in the student center. One can go the gym with, walk to town with, get some food, and so much more here; no matter what you choose to do it will be fun. Clubs and organizations are also a great way to get involved and have some fun up at Slippery Rock.
Bang for the buck
Quaker Steak has nights where they will do $0.60 boneless wings, and other special events throughout every month during the school year. The bookstore will sell special event, or game day t-shirts for 5-10 dollars throughout the year. This is a great way to stock up for Green and White Fridays! The Bookstore also has an awesome Christmas sale every year.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
Slippery Rock has four traditions:
Rub The Rock: It is said that on the way to a test, speech, whatever it may be if you stop in the quad and rub the rock you will have good luck.
Hello Tradition: This tradition is saying a simple hello to everyone you pass on campus, and anywhere that you are. A simple hello and and smile to someone passing by could really brighten their day!
Green and White Fridays: This shows school pride, every friday it is asked that you wear your school gear or green and white!
Fight Song and Alma mater: These are sung at games and special events. These songs are another representation of Slippery Rock school spirit.
Clubs and Activities
I am very involved at Slippery Rock. I am in FLSP, Green and White Society, and Paranormal Rock. FLSP stands for First-Year Leadership Scholar Program and is a great way to learn and take on leadership roles that will brighten your future. Green and White Society members are your school's student ambassadors; we work closely with the president, alumni, and student government. We also are well-versed in the history and traditions of the university and are very school-spirited! Paranormal Rock, the university's club that provides students with a chance conduct their own ghost hunts. There are hundreds of clubs and organizations on campus that are amazing. They provide an opportunity to make new friends, break out of your shell, and open new doors to the future.
Campus Safety
The campus feels like home. I am never nervous or scared on campus. The university has help boxes all across campus that are in place for anyone who would ever need assistance or feel unsafe.

Slippery Rock is a great school for students who like average size, as well as smaller sized, classes, moderate student population, and a great education. Students at Slippery Rock will never find themselves bored, for the institution always hosts concerts, movies, and other social activities on a weekly/monthly basis which is great. Lastly, Slipper Rock has some of the best professors around, and I highly recommend this school for anyone seeking fun and a great education.
Tips for prospective students
Always make sure to balance work and pleasure. Freshman students always have the tendency to play before they want to do their work or study. Studies come first that is why we are here. Students who do not socialize will not enjoy their college life. Being friendly and mingling is one of the most important things about college. It is a time to meet new people and make life long friends. Students should not be afraid to ask their professors for extra help. Your professors like to see that you are serious about the course and striving to get the best grade you can. Managing your budget is very important. Unless parents are willing, money doesn't flow in for college students regularly, so watch what you spend and do not buy too may university shirts and sweat pants!
Academic Rigor
I'm glad that Slippery Rock is not a school with easy courses. There may be some here, but as a biology major, all my core courses challenge me in different ways and I'm thankful for that. If my classes were easy I wouldn't be learning anything. Challenging classes makes the brain work harder. I like having my brain exercised and pushed to it's limits. Though some courses may be difficult, the staffing is amazing and makes the whole process and enjoyable experience.
Dorm Life
The dorm life is great. I live in the residence halls, which are newer, and I love it. I applied to be a CA (community assistant). The dorms are styled like an apartment and there are many different selections to choose from as to how many roommates you would like. Living in dorms is a great way to meet people, especially freshman year, and it's conveniently located on campus next to the dining hall, bookstore, and the quad. I love the dorms.
Food and Dining
The food at Slippery Rock is hit or miss. The main dining hall, Boozle, has great days and awful days. The salad bar and soups are always good, as well as the pizza and desserts. My favorite place to go is Starbucks and I'm glad a small school like mine has one. I also enjoy the T&B cafe in the library. Quaker Steak & Lube is great when you're craving wings, and Rocky's is great for your little Knick-Knack snacks and wraps. Off campus loactions are great! My favorites include Compadres in Grove City and North County Brewing Company right on Main Street in Slippery Rock.
What to do for fun
My favorite place to go is the ARC the schools gym. I like to work out, but they also offer Zumba, Yoga, Hip-Hop Abs, and Cycling classes. There is also a nice rock wall and indoor pool. They offer recreational sports where you can make your own team and sign up to play! I am also a cheerleader at Slippery Rock, so I enjoy going to practice and seeing my friends. Football games during football season are always fun! Come join the fan section and root for the ROCK! Slippery Rock also has meet and greets, street fairs, activities in the quad, pep rallies, dances, movies, concerts, guest speakers, and more!
Bang for the buck
I consider SRU a bargain school. This is a great quality, D2, out-of-state/in-state school. The price is not too much and out of it you get many free events, great education, great social life, and an overall great experience. I would never pay more for another school. This school is a great price that offers many scholarships, and it is just an overall wonderful school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus
Students like to rub the rock in the quad for good luck. Our Alma Mater is very important to us. There supposedly a ghost called Emma that haunts North Hall. If you're not from western PA, the people here say 'pop instead of soda.
Great for these types of students
SRU is great for all types of students. SRU is a very diverse school. There is a home for every personality here. It's very easy for students to make friends and to find that social group that is perfect for them.
Clubs and Activities
There are so many clubs here I can't even name them all, and if there's a club we don't have, you can make one. There are no issues with students finding a club that is just right for them.
Greek Life
I'm not to sure what the greek life is like here. I'm not apart of it. I know there's maybe twenty or more fraternities and sororities. I don't think greek life is that important to the students here. Sports are more important here.
Campus Safety
I've never had a problem at SRU pertaining to safety. There a 911 dial boxes placed all over campus, but no one ever uses them. SRU is a public campus so towns people can come on campus, but there have only been a few instances where security and police were needed. I feel very comfortable here. I never feel in danger, but like anyone will tell you, don't walk around outside late at night by yourself.
