What Students Are Saying
For those who are planning to apply to Howard, make sure to not only focus on having a great GPA but get involved in extra-curricular activities, as Howard has a very active student body. Incoming freshman should make sure to stay on top of their registration process. Howard requires a lot of medical information from incoming freshman, and I know a few students who didn't get to stay longer than a month because they didn't take their registration process seriously.

Don't party too hard during your first semester. I know several people who will not be able to complete their education at Howard because they were the ones getting ready every Thursday/Friday/Saturday night for the club instead of studying. Also be aware of your surroundings. Travel in large groups during the night and use the shuttles as much as possible so you won't have to worry about walking back to the dorms all the way from the metro. When you're about to buy books for classes, ask upperclassmen and look around campus for flyers of people selling their books for cheaper than the bookstore prices. Join clubs and community service organizations to build up your experience for those future internships and jobs. Stay focused on your grades. It is, after all, the reason why you'll be here in the first place so why not sit down with a friend and study!! Use your professors' office hours and sit in the front of the class. Use study groups for help before big tests and finals. There are so many libraries that you can go for quiet time and research. Lastly, have fun. The next 4 years will change your life forever. Howard has birthed thousands of successful people and the legacy will continue with you if you put forth the effort.

Some tips to keep in mind is to stay focus. Do your best not to burn bridges because this is college and you never know who that person will be in a couple years. Work hard so you can play hard.

Know thy self. Haha, you will be exposed to every race and life style of color and must choose the person that you want to be before you arrive. ALWAYS keep a copy of EVERYTHING important--HU will teach you to take control of your own life in the midst of mistakes from others.
Express your self, HU is a fashion show to some; but what it really is, is a free environment to learn how to express yourself professionally and with personality.

Prospective students, should be wary of the status of all their documentation. Copies of everything are a necessity. Besides that, students should come prepared with a goal and ambition. They must be open minded and remember to be tolerant.

Howard University is the place to be! If you are interested in attending an HBCU this is it. HU was the first HBCU and continues to be the best!

Some helpful tips would be to make sure you get to know the dean of your school and any other people in power. They will be able to help you financially and write you great reccomendations. Make sure that you know your advisor and speak with them throughout they year, not just when it's time to register. Don't party until you get your work done, there will always be parties, but there may not be another opportunity for your grade. Get to know your professors as well, a lot of times if you have a relationship with your professor, they may be more willing to help you.
Ashley Jones from Pontiac, MI
Do not come here without a set plan on how you are going to pay for it. Keep an open mind about everything because there will be some downs, but how you get up is what matters. Also, I highly recommend you do not take a math class at Howard. Look up your major's plan of study and take the required math at your local junior college.
Freshman
Don't buy unnecessary things! There's always free events going on where you can get free stuff. I have tee shirts and knickknacks to last me a lifetime! These events are also great ways to make friends.
My-Xaviera from Spencerport, NY
SATS!! GOOD SCORES=GOOD MONEY
The more you come out of pocket on the less you can enjoy on campus. Less events you can pay for like homecoming, broccoli fest, Bison Ball, Bison run etc. Unless you have money :)
