Am learning a lot | There are many different programs at FSU so you will be surrounded with experienced and helpful faculty. The university is strong in the liberal arts and hard sciences, but they also have a number of other outstanding programs including criminology, sociology, psychology, law, and business. Orientation at FSU was very informative for both my parents and myself. It was a 2-day learning experience that consisted mainly of talks by various campus reps/student leaders. It was a great start where you can meet people from different backgrounds and experiences. I was drawn to find out more about FSU’s medical program. In 2005, the FSU College of Medicine received full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The FSU College of Medicine is now ranked among the top 5 in nation for turning out doctors who choose to specialize in family medicine. Medical students will complete their clinical rotations in the third or fourth year at one of these regional campuses in Orlando, Pensacola, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Daytona Beach, and Fort Pierce. This is extremely important to me since my educational goal is to one day become a medical doctor. This may seem like a daunting task, but I believe that if I work hard and set the right goals for myself I can do it. Also, FSU provides enormous research opportunities that are supported by the school of Computational Science and Informational Technology and the famous the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is the world’s largest magnetic of it’s kind. FSU is an excellent university, but you will need to work very hard. |
Am enjoying being here | Florida State University campus is located in beautiful Tallahassee, Florida. There are impressive red brick buildings, water fountains, bronze sculptures, and winding tree-lined walkways. It’s easy to get around campus, although parking can be sometimes difficult. However, they do have a number of parking garages. You can always find the lawns and pathways filled with students enjoying the walk to class, throwing a frisbee, studying under a tree, or soaking up the sun. There are student lecture halls that are 200-300+ which somewhat common during the first year or two, but I hear that they will disappear by the time you reach the upper division. There are old and new dormitories for students that are filled with mostly freshman. It’s best to get your application early if you want to get into the new ones. It also has one of the best Greek systems in the nation and I’m happy to be a part of it. If you want a school where you can learn, play, and save money then FSU is the school for you. The biggest enjoyment for me is when everyone on campus and the surrounding city unite to form the strong school spirit that Seminoles are known for. I’m amazed at the enthusiasm from the crowd during the pre-game ritual when a student dressed up like Chief Osceola throws down the flaming spear in the middle of the football field thereby declaring war on the opposing team. FSU has been a great value for me given its high academic standards, awesome athletic programs, and a wide range of social activities. It has been one of the best decisions of my life! |
Bang for the buck | FSU has a bus service that runs from 7am to 7pm and it’s free to students as part of your tuition. The student football tickets are also a great value in my opinion. FSU also offers many scholarships and grants to those students who meet the eligibility requirements. There are also a number of inexpensive hotels around the campus for parents to stay at while visiting their student. |
Tips for prospective students | My words of advice to prospective students would be to develop better study habits and management of my finances. When I was in high school I could study the night before a test and do very well on it. Those days are definitively over now that I’m in college. Now it’s all about communicating more with my professors, study groups, and tutoring services if needed. Also looking back I realized how nice I had it at home such as free food/rent, money to buy clothes, and I didn’t have to pay for classes nor books. Again, those days are definitively over now that I’m in college. Now it’s all about managing my own finances and developing a budget each semester. I’ve opened up a checking account to simplify the tracking of my college expenses. It’s amazing how my account can look so big in the beginning of the semester and shrink so quickly by the end of it. It’s like what everyone says it’s all about balancing what is important. |
Great for these types of students | If you are looking for an all around college experience than The Florida State University is for you. I think that any student who believes in the traditions that Florida State University represents would be proud to attend this university. I believe that any student can relate to the Florida State University's motto, which is Vires, Artes, and Mores. These are Latin words that signify strength, skill and character. These words have formed the very foundation that has been driving force behind my continued success at Florida State University. Any student that embodies these same traditions and is passionate about pursing excellent education will be an excellent addition to the Seminole family. |

Am learning a lot | I took on my entire liberal arts degree in the 1st year so I definitely got a lot out of all the classes I took. As long as you put in the effort you will get the most out of the classes at FSU. |
Am enjoying being here | Being at Florida State was by far the best choice I could have made for myself. There are so many activities for students that are virtually free, a student can find something to do on campus every single day of the week. |
Bang for the buck | With the current budget cuts in Florida, it is difficult to do many things including getting an education. Luckily, FSU works with the budget crisis committee and so far has not cut anything vital to the education system or the student activities at FSU. A student here can get a great education and have fun for one of the lowest rates in the state. |
Tips for prospective students | TIME MANAGEMENT!!! It's so important to make sure you dedicate enough time to your studies especially in your first year. Also, probably the most important tip I can offer an incoming freshmen would be to get involved. The best way to shrink the campus and not feel lost is to get involved in a school sponsored club, activity, sport, student government or even a religious organization. |
Great for these types of students | This school it great for students who are spirited, motivated, determined, and ready to have the best four years of their lives! |

Am learning a lot | I've learned a lot about myself, my state, and my prospective major. Moving to Florida State University was the best decision I've ever made. |
Am enjoying being here | Tallahassee has so much to offer me. I love politics and Tallahassee is the center of All Florida Politics. Just in one year of being here I've been able to meet our National Congressman, and multiple state senators. Florida State University has amazing classes, with outstanding faculty. |
Bang for the buck | Florida State University has some of the lowest in-state tuition in the entire country for an amazing education! As long as you work your hardest and study for everything then you'll do fine! Tallahassee has so much to offer college students! |
Tips for prospective students | Apply for the early deadline and apply for summer semester. The summer semester is the best way to ease your way into the college atmosphere. At FSU there are only 6,000 people on campus in the summer versus the nearly 40,000 in the fall and spring. |
Great for these types of students | FSU is great for anyone who is interested in the Arts. FSU has an outstanding Film School, music department, and performing arts department. It is one of three schools across the country that has a college circus, and a damn good one at that! |

Am learning a lot | Professors are very well educated and are acquainted with the course material. They also offer extended office hours to assist students with questions. |
Am enjoying being here | Florida State University has a extremely diverse campus and offers a variety of clubs and organizations. Greek life is wonderful here :) |
Bang for the buck | The cost is very low, but don't let the cheap factor fool you. The professors are over qualified for their positions. The university also awards hundreds of students with scholarships. Becoming a student, you also gain free activities, such as bowling, movies, and a large gym. There are also free activities everyday advertised in the Union. |
Tips for prospective students | Prospective students: - Apply early for housing - Apply for scholarships - Join a FIG - Do not overload yourself your first semester - Educate yourself about the campus - Keep in touch with your family - Stay away from partying, concentrate on your courses - Buy books after attending the first day of classes - Give yourself a day to learn the bus schedule - Join many different clubs and organizations - Get involved in Greek Life - Attend all sport events - Dance in Dance Marathon (Children's Miracle Network) - Do not procrastinate - Study a little at a time, not the night before an exam - Time Management - Get acquainted with your professors - Attend office hours, reviews |
Great for these types of students | Due to the great diversity of Florida State University campus, all types of students are welcomed. Students from all walks of life are able to call Florida State University their home. Majors offered include art history, business, biological science, Asian studies, classics and religion, nursing, and theatre; among many others. The campus also offers a variety of clubs and organizations to meet any standards, which brings students from a distance closer together. |

Am learning a lot | Everyday whether from the teachers or other students there is always knowledge to be gained. |
Am enjoying being here | There is always something to do at FSU. With the various organizations, activities, and clubs on campus you will never be bored. That said it is up to you to get out and find something that interests you. So my suggestion is to get out of the dorms with some friends and get involved. It will make your college experience one to remember. |
Bang for the buck | Unless you have a full ride to any college or university it will cost a pretty penny, but no matter where you decide to get your education it will always be worth it. However, at FSU our tuition pays for a number of perks such as our transportation. We have buses that run on and off campus during the day, and our Safe Bus and the Night Nole at night. It also covers our fitness facility which has state of the art equipment, free weights, olympic size swimming pool, spa area, food/nutrition experts. |
Tips for prospective students | Get Involved, Make Friends, Get to know Professors, Get help if you're falling behind in a class, Go to class Everyday (no matter how boring), Read the text book (unless not reccomended by Professor), Do the homework and extra credit (it's rarely given so take advantage), Use all the resources you have (Older students, Professors, RA's, and Peers), Most important pick something you love to do and stick with it whether it be a major or an activity. If you do what you have to do now, you can do what you want to do later. |
Great for these types of students | There is something for everyone at FSU. No matter who you are or where you come from. And if you find that there is something missing you are welcome to start a new organization to add to our diversity. |

Am learning a lot | Whether you take classes taught by professors or graduate students you are guaranteed to expand your knowledge immensely! Every person on our faculty is incredibly knowledgeable and a great resource for students. I have learned something new everyday that I have been here, whether it was directly from my teachers or something that spawned from their class discussions and other student participation. |
Am enjoying being here | There is never a dull moment here at FSU! On any given day you can take a walk around campus and find something going on such as Market Wednesdays or student organizations promoting themselves with free food and games. Club Down Under holds many events (most free or under $10 w/ student ID!) too. If you're looking for some off campus fun the FSU Reservation is free for students and has activities such as rock climbing, volleyball, and kayaking or you can stop by one of the many apartment complexes that hold pool parties on a regular basis. Also, the nightlife here is top of the line and it's CHEAP!!; There are incredible specials to be found every night at the students' favorite hot spots. |
Bang for the buck | The change in Bright Futures policies is going to effect all recipients. FSU faculty gives their all to students who make the effort for themselves to make sure that they will pass classes and not be forced to drop and repay fees because of poor grades. Another GREAT perk is that there are so many things included in tuition. Free on and off campus transportation (certain areas), access to a state of the art gymnasium, FSU reservation, and many other discounted items are available to students all by simply flashing their FSU ID card. |
Tips for prospective students | I cannot stress the importance of keeping up with your classes enough!! Even if you didn't have to try in high school, you are going to have to put in some effort here. FSU offers a great class about time management and adjusting to campus life that I highly recommend. Going to see you professors at their office hours is also a great way to ensure success. On a more social note, FSU is such a large campus that I suggest everyone GET INVOLVED!!!!! FSU offers such a huge variety of things to try so whether you join SGA, Greek Life, Sports Intramurals, Religious Organizations, Major-Specific Organizations, or something as simple as an Ultimate Frisbee team, don't be afraid to get out there and try something..... then get ready to start the best four years of your life!!! |
Great for these types of students | FSU has majors and activites for EVERYONE, so no matter what your race, religion, or interests, I guarantee that there is something that will peak your interests!!! |

Am learning a lot | The professors I've had so far are extremely knowledgeable at what they are sharing. Teaching is what they love doing, so a tip for all prospective students is to talk to your professors outside of class. |
Am enjoying being here | It's an extremely beautiful campus with friendly people. If you're worried about how many people attend this school, don't let it affect your decision too much because you will probably find a small group of tight nit friends right away as well as a larger network of friends. |
Tips for prospective students | Time management is key. Not only do you have to manage all of your school work, but you have to manage when you hang out with friends, when you eat, and when you fit in everything in between. Also, try out a meal plan for at least your first year. It will keep you on a regular eating schedule full of nutritious foods that I have founds surprisingly delicious. |
Great for these types of students | There are so many types of students here I wouldn't worry about fitting in. However, you must be ready to learn! |

In three sentences | Florida State is the best possible school that I could have chosen to go to. There is always something to do on campus, whether it be one of the 600+ clubs, go to the library, or simply playing frisbee on Landis Green with some friends. Nothing compares to game day in Tallahassee. |
Tips for prospective students | Do well in high school, get solid grades, take AP/AICE classes, have plenty of community service on your record, and score high on both the ACT and SAT (I recommend taking both, in the case that you lack in one). Cappex is very accurate in whether or not you will get accepted into Florida State. |
Academic Rigor | Most of the professors are very caring about their students, despite the huge undergraduate class sizes. They usually reply quickly to emails, and always have office hours, so that you can get one-on-one time with them. |
Dorm Life | The dorms here are second to none. I live in McCollum Hall, which is the cheapest dorm on campus, and it is still very nice. There are no more community style dorms on campus, so every room has their own bathroom. There are tons of brand new dorms that are currently being built so far. The only reason that there are not 5 stars is because the parking situation (like at every D1 school) is a little dicey. Only the top two floors in all of the parking garages are available for overnight parking. If you live off campus, you would need to get to school very early in order to find a parking spot. |
Food and Dining | While both Fresh Foods and Suwannee are splendid at first, the food does start to get old after awhile. Get the VIP option so that you can break the monotony of the dining halls and instead eat at a restaurant on campus. That is the best deal that you can get. |
What to do for fun | 600+ clubs, there is one for everybody. If you find that there are no clubs for you, then feel free to start your own! The process is very easy and doesn't take very long. Tallahassee doesn't have that many options for things to do, but there are cities that are not too far away. New Orleans is a 5 hour drive, Atlanta is a 4 hour drive, and Jacksonville is only 2 hours away, so if Tallahassee gets a little stale, a big city is not very far out! |
Bang for the buck | While the in state tuition is a little bit on the high side in the state, the campus definitely makes up for it! The professors seem to care, the buildings are well maintained, and the grounds on campus are always clean and blooming with life! |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | The war chant and tomahawk chop are the signature traditions at FSU. Also, for your 21st birthday, it is common for people to get thrown into Wescott fountain. |
Great for these types of students | Focused, social students that want to succeed in college, make connections, and land a well paying job after college. The largest majors are Business, Psychology, and Pre-Med. |
Clubs and Activities | 600+, as state before. If there is nothing that interests you, start your own! |
Greek Life | Although I am not involved in Greek Life, their presence can be seen all over campus. I hear that it is pretty competitive to get into a frat/sorority. |
Campus Safety | Never once have I felt unsafe on campus. They have these emergency buttons all over campus. It's said that no matter where you stand on campus, you can see an emergency button. The campus police (in my opinion) are better and quicker reacting than the Tallahassee police. |

Am learning a lot | I am currently in my second year at The Florida State University and couldn't be happier. All of my teachers and teacher assistants have been nothing but helpful in every aspect of my education. The professors are always accessible, no matter how big a class you are enrolled in. I have enjoyed the subject matter in the majority of my required classes as well. |
Am enjoying being here | I absolutely love going to school here. Tallahassee is truly my home now. The campus is beautiful and very traditional. Our campus is not very spread out, so it is extremely easy to get from one side of campus to another without much trouble. I am also a member of Greek Life here, and that has opened a huge world of possibilities to me. All of my sisters are so involved and smart, which encourages me to be the best student and person that I can be. |
Bang for the buck | FSU is definitely a bang for your buck. Many out of state students come to FSU because the out-of-state tuition is cheaper than the in-state tuition is in many states. All of the sporting events are included in tuition, so you don't have to worry about paying for a football or basketball ticket every time you want to go to a game. You just provide your student I.D and you get in free! Also, the cost of living up here isn't too horrible. There are a bunch of restaurants that are student friendly, and delicious too. |
Tips for prospective students | Start taking your ACT and SAT at the beginning of your junior year. Keep taking them until you get a score high enough to get a 100% Bright Futures scholarship. Get involved within your high school and community, and write an awesome essay. FSU loves diverse students, so get out there and get experience working with lots of different types of people. |
Great for these types of students | Anyone who is looking for a university with a lot of tradition and a very friendly student population. Get involved, and you will see just how amazing FSU truly is. |

Am learning a lot | The classes are challenging and interesting. Our professors are extremely knowledgeable in their fields and are helpful to students who are willing to learn. |
Am enjoying being here | Beautiful campus located blocks from the Capitol. College town atmosphere (FAMU and TCC are just a few miles away). People are friendly and outgoing. Something for everyone. |
Bang for the buck | Tuition is not a bad price, but the room & board and meal plan fees are sometimes not worth the money. Do your research on the residence halls (some are very cheap, but they are really gross) and decide if you want to buy a meal plan way ahead of time to save money. |
Tips for prospective students | Do not neglect the deadlines! Once you get in, pay your housing deposit so you will be more likely to get the residence hall of your choice. Apply for an early orientation session, so you will get the best classes. |
Great for these types of students | Large and diverse student body. Social atmosphere. |
