Am learning a lot | The teachers here so far are high-quality. They care about whether or not you learn what they are teaching you, and they are always willing to answer your questions and meet with you if you are having difficulties. Each has a different teaching style, so you may not get along 100% with everyone. However, in the end, I promise that you will learn at least something from every class. |
Am enjoying being here | I really love being here!!!!!! There is right now about 10,000 total students- not too big, not too small. The campus is its own community, and yet if you want to explore the city, it's easily a ten minute walk to get there. There are TONS of activities, sports, and clubs to join, and if you don't see one you like, you are free to create your own. Dormrooms feel a bit cramped, but it's homey, and comes with decent furniture. The campus is nice too (i.e. no litter). Food is decent- not like home cooking, but then again, what is? And finally- be prepared for Steeler mania, cause this is where it's at. |
Tips for prospective students | one) if you don't know your roommate, call/Facebook with them beforehand, and get to know them; two) if you have any issues during the semester, seek help- RAs, teachers, friends, anyone. It's worth it.; three) go to class, and do your work. It'll make finals so much easier. four) get to know the teacher. It'll make it easier to ask for help if you need it. five) get involved. There's tons of stuff to do. six) you'll get out what you put into your college experience; seven) NEVER go into the city without a buddy, cab money and a cell phone; and finally) it's okay if you feel scared and/or homesick. You're not the first, and you won't be the last to feel that way. And it will pass in time. |
Great for these types of students | Duquesne is great for everyone- city goers, small-towners, preppies, gamers, jocks, geeks, you name them. There is something for everyone. And no matter what your major is or what you're into, trust me, you will find stuff to do and people to hang out with. |

Am learning a lot | Duquesne University is a very prestigious school that has an entire melting pot of students. You will find an interesting mix of people from all different races, religions, and ethnicities. Also, teachers are absolutely great. I am going to be a sophomore and I must say that the teachers I met in my freshman year were exceptional. I am a psychology major and I feel like I had a great relationship with my psych teachers. One teacher offered me advice and told me that I could use her as a reference anytime. I feel that the professors at Duquesne actually care about their students and are not solely there for a paycheck. |
Am enjoying being here | This university is practically in the heart of Pittsburgh, however, it has it's own little environment. Unlike the crowded, busy hustle of the streets of Pittsburgh, Duquesne offers a laid-back environment. In the warm seasons the campus constantly is being trimmed and having flowers planted. Walking to class you're almost guaranteed to see a squirrel or two run across your path. It honestly is the best of both worlds. Also, Duquesne has the a weekly newsletter emailed out to all students every week updating everyone on the events that happens daily. Last year I remember talent shows, carnivals, free food, caricature paintings, and so much more that is always free. And if none of that floats your boat, you're only a 10 minute bus ride from Oakland or the Southside works. |
Bang for the buck | As I mentioned previously, it is a prestigious school and it definitely will leave a dent in your wallet. The school offers plenty of jobs for students, activities, internships and more. Also, unlike larger colleges, the majority of classes will consist of about 30 students and teachers will learn your name quickly. Which is nice to have because they get to know you personally rather than just be a name on their attendance sheet. So it may be more expensive than some public or other private schools but you will end up paying for it in the end. |
Tips for prospective students | If I can give you any advice, I would definitely recommend eating at Options as much as you can. Out of all the food places and cafeterias on campus that you can use your meal plan for - Options is the best. It's the closest to home cooking and the staff workers are always super friendly. Also, Starbucks accepts flex only during evening hours... but remember that usually the last 2 weeks of school they accept it any time of the day! And trust me it will be needed during finals week. |
Great for these types of students | Any students that want to go to a well-respected school that teachers will promise to know your name in the first few weeks of school. It holds about 6,000 undergraduate students and every semester I have had all of my teachers know my name. Also, if you want to live in a big city with great night life but want to be far away from it that it will be quiet and mellow at night if you stay on campus, this is perfect for you. Also, just because it is a Catholic school does not mean that every student is religious and you will not be forced to see any religious view if you do not wish to. However, I do know that if you went to a Catholic high school you get a decent discount. |

Am learning a lot | Learning is very easy here, the teachers use many methods from group work to recitation sessions and having tutors available for everyone. Teachers are very approachable and easy to communicate with; via e-mail, office hours and many teachers give a phone number as well. Also, many subjects have numerous Teaching Assistants and some even have Undergraduate Assistants that make it even easier to learn the material for courses. |
Am enjoying being here | There is so much to do, there are soccer, football, basketball, volleyball and many more games to watch. There are also literally hundreds of clubs and organizations to, multiple intramural activities that are scattered through out the day to fit in anyone's schedule, and numerous events put on by Duquesne, including video game contests and movie nights. Plus there is the city life, professional sporting events, tons of restuarants, fairs, parks, and so much more |
Bang for the buck | The experience is definitely worth it, for the great education and the life lessons learned through everything going on, on and off campus. |
Tips for prospective students | Research the Pittsburgh area before starting school, the public transportation takes time to get used to and bring a map of the city with you. Stay organized, there are so many students that your teachers aren't going to give too many second chances, many of the schools are very competitive so you don't want your grades to drop below expectations. |
Great for these types of students | Almost anyone, everyone is friendly and anyone will fit in. There are tons of majors and minors to choose from too that allow almost everybody to be able to apply for what they want to do, but most majors have minimum GPA requirements so you can't be lazy and have to do the work. |

Am learning a lot | As a Freshman student at Duquesne University, I have learned so much during my first semester. I have taken courses in philosophy, English, and science. I learned something new in all of these course and each new idea expanded on the stuff I already knew. |
Am enjoying being here | I am a good distance away from home, and I am the only student from my old high school to go to Duquesne University. I have gained more meeting new people and I have made so many different friends. I enjoy the hills and the view. |
Bang for the buck | Yes. |
Tips for prospective students | Visit the campus and look at what the schools are offering. The program/major that I am studying is DPT, and part of this that I have six years of school and when I graduate I was have a BS is Biology and Health Science Management and a DR in PT. This program was a get set up and that is why I picked it. When I went to visit the campus, I really could see myself doing well. |
Great for these types of students | Any student that is open to learning new ideas and expanding the way that they look at things. |

Academic Rigor | the size of the classes is about the same as in high school, so it is easier to get to know professors. all the professors i have had are very helpful for students to be as successful as they can potentially be. |
Am enjoying being here | Everyone is very friendly, and they offer lots of clubs and greek life to meet new people. They also have university sponsored night programs and lots of deals to have fun with friends on campus. |
Bang for the buck | a bit pricey since it is a private university, but they offer lots of scholarships for academics. |
Tips for prospective students | apply! it doesn't hurt to! it's a really beautiful campus and great school, strongly recommended. |
Great for these types of students | anyone who likes getting to know teachers. not a lot of large lectures in business school. duquesne has a very strong business school. |

Am learning a lot | Duquesne University is a mid-size campus with all buildings within walking distance from the dorms. The learning community (with approximately 10,000 students) is extraordinary with teachers willing to help you in any way possible in order to earn that A. Paid tutors are available for students which shows that the university does care about your success. Teachers are willing to work with you over conflicts that may arise and offer lots of opportunities to hear and help with any questions you may have. Duquesne also brings in a lot of guest speakers, which can be listened to free of charge. One that was brought in last year was Eric Holden Jr., Attorney General of the United States! I have learned so much, and I know that if you go there, you will too! : ) |
Am enjoying being here | Duquesne has 80+ organizations on campus that hold events almost every week including free movies on Fridays. One of these organizations is the Office of Freshman Services, which assists freshman in their adjustment to college by offering guidance, newsletters, and a one of a kind orientation program. Duquesne is also located in the heart of Pittsburgh and within walking distance of the Consol Energy Center. For sports fans, this town is perfect since it is home to the Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates. I would definitely check out Duquesne and all it has to offer by going to www.duq.edu. |
Bang for the buck | Duquesne is expensive. However, by going here you will learn a lot from professors, other students, and life in general that is invaluable. You will be with students from all over the world and have opportunities to study abroad in Ireland and Italy if you wish. Plus, the financial aid office is willing to help out as much as possible to ensure that all costs will be covered. This university really wants to help you to succeed. |
Tips for prospective students | Adjusting to college life is difficult. Dorm life is a necessary evil, and hopefully you are blessed with a great roommate, if not try to make the best of the situation. You must be diligent with your studies especially during the first month because as soon as the first round of tests hit, the rest of the semester only gets harder. Please take advantage of the free tutors that are available if the material is difficult and hard to understand. Try to get involved in at least one organization on campus to maximize your potential while at Duquesne. Finally, find a routine for studying that works and stick with it. Remember that you are there to earn an education, you can party the rest of your life once you earn that high paying job! |
Great for these types of students | Duquesne is well known for their health services programs (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Speech-Language Pathology, and Nursing) as well as for the Mylan School of Pharmacy. If you are considering these professions, then Duquesne University should be high on your list! |

Am learning a lot | Duquesne University has SO much to offer for students of any age and status in school. Starting out with the basic courses you gain an even stronger knowledge in areas such as Mathematics, Theology, and Philosophy, which will most definitely help you as you advance into upper class courses. The professors at this school are absolutely incredible and want nothing more than to see you learn as much as you possibly can while enrolled. There is a lot of work involved regardless of what degree you pursue, but that's the whole point of attending school, to gain knowledge! |
Am enjoying being here | I absolutely love being in Pittsburgh. Duquesne's campus is gorgeous and so peaceful compared to most Universities located in a central, downtown area. Living on campus has definitely been a rewarding experience, letting me get involved in a number of different activities ranging from Greek Life to helping the freshman as a Team Leader during Orientation. Also, many people will refer to Duquesne as a happy family, which may sound a little awkward to most... However, rest assured that you really do become a family in the sense that you have an instant connection with anyone involved with Duquesne. There is always, always, always someone that knows of someone that has gone to Duquesne. Believe me, even after studying abroad in Rome (another HUGE thing offered by Duquesne!), I realized just how small the world really is. |
Bang for the buck | Although Duquesne is a bit pricey, it is beyond worth the expense. The experience and knowledge that you gain at this school will far outweigh the price that you pay for tuition. Besides, the money you are putting into this school is going towards the amazing educators and facilities on campus that enable you to reach your goals and graduate with a prestigious degree. |
Tips for prospective students | Come into Duquesne with an open mind. There is no better piece of advice that I was offered as a new student than to make as many connections as you possibly can. It may sound daunting, however you'll find that it is very doable and beyond worth it. Get yourself involved in anything that interests you; Greek Life, Orientation, Volunteering, Drama Club... The possibilities are seemingly endless. Make sure that you have a firm foundation in extracurricular activities like those I just listed and you will be reaping the benefits in no time! Also, never hesitate to contact your professors outside of class. Once you establish to your professor that you care about the class and express your concerns and goals, you will, once again, only benefit. |

In three sentences | Duquesne is a beautiful and small campus. You can walk the entire length of the campus in under 20 minutes. Class sizes are small and professors are very willing to help a struggling student. |
Tips for prospective students | Depending on your major you can have a lot to a little amount of homework. Most homework includes reading textbooks or novels. Be focused on school, but have fun. DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. |
Academic Rigor | The classes are tough, but passable if you do the work and do not spend all your time goofing off. Studying is the key and so is attending office hours if you are struggling. |
Dorm Life | Every LLC is set up differently on the inside and houses different grades and some mix genders. Every LLC hosts different events for their residents and the room sizes are decent. |
Food and Dining | Lots of food options on and around campus and most accept your student flex, basically cash that is a part of your meal plan. There is an all you can eat buffet, Starbucks, Chick fil a, market, mexican place, and more. |
What to do for fun | Weekly there are different events held but different groups and clubs to get students involved and social. Dances, game nights, movie nights, and parties near in the city. |
Bang for the buck | It is a very expensive private school but it is worth the money. The equipment they provide you with in the classroom and all the amenities balance out. Free laundry!! |
Great for these types of students | Hard workers, focused on school but love to have a little fun, health science majors, law majors, undecided majors. |
Clubs and Activities | Football, cheer leading, track, swim team, game club, International Students Organization, Latin American Student Association, SGA, and much more. |
Greek Life | Loads of different fraternities and sororities, academic, major-based, and social. |
Campus Safety | Students receive emails from campus security and staff anytime a situation occurs on campus, even something as small as a power outage in a building. You will know about everything that happens. |

In three sentences | Duquesne University is the ideal foundation for a fruitufl future. Duquesne offers rigorous academics, extracurricular activities, friendly staff, and the feel of a larger University. Duquesne University is the perfect fit for those looking for an enjoyable college experience. |
Tips for prospective students | My single and most import tip for prospective students would be to get involved. Duquesne offers so many wonderful extracurricular activites. From greek life, intramurals, study abroad, clubs, and campus ministry Duquesne has something for everyone. By getting involved with extracurricular activities you deversify yourself so much more as a person. You make new friends, learn new things, and better yourself for future success. Why not open yourself up and get involved with extracurricular activities? You would be foolish not to. |
Academic Rigor | The classes at Duquesne are difficult. Each class I have taken so far has been rigorous. Although, with that being said the Professors want you to succeed. Every Professor I have had, has been more than willing to help me. Their aid has been a great tool so far in my studies. I can not imagine being where I am today without them. I did not realize that most college Professors are not like this. I just assumed that because Duquesne's professors are like this, that it is the custom across the nation. That is not the case. Many of my friends from various other PA schools have told me that I 'lucked out here at Duquesne. |
Dorm Life | Although I am a commuter, I can offer insight on dorm life. Many of my friends live on campus in various buildings. From what I have experienced and what I am told, Duquesne dorm life is a great experience. Everyone I know enjoys their time living on campus. This is accredited to Duquesne community feel. Although Duquesne houses nearly 4,000 students, many know eachother on a first name bases. It seems that, no matter where you go on campus you are bound to know someone. I do not believe many Universities can claim that. *I only am willing to give it 4 stars because I have not experienced it yet myself. After this year I will be able to give you a more personal review. |
Food and Dining | Duquesne's food and dining is delicous. They offer several different options and are continuing to expand. There newest addition Freshens has quickly become a student favorite. Instead of going into great detail about our food and dining I am going to attatch the schools link to campus dining: http://www.duq.edu/life-at-duquesne/dining They do it much more justice than I can. |
What to do for fun | Duquesne is in downtown Pittsburgh. That sentence alone should put in perspective all of the options available for a fun time. Due to its location the options of fun thins to do are nearly endless. Duquesne offers the southside, dining, shopping, sport venues, and more. For example, only two blocks away is Consol Engergy Center, home of the Pittburgh Penguins. Several times a year the Penguins offer Student Rush tickets. The gist of the Student Rush offer is that the Penguins reserve tickets specifically for college students for only $30. For those who know the NHL, they realize how unbeatable this offer is. I myself just took advantage of this offer today. I am going to the playoff game against the Rangers tonight. The kicker, I am sitting in the lower bowl (MSRP: 250). |

In three sentences | Duquesne University is the most challenging and amazing school I can imagine. It is everything I expected before coming into college. The social and academic life are both surreal. |
Tips for prospective students | Make sure to keep your major broad because once you commit to a major it is difficult to change it. |
Academic Rigor | Definitely challenging every single class. |
Dorm Life | I have made some of the greatest friends here. |
Food and Dining | The food will get old quickly and isn't very tasty, but there are many options. |
What to do for fun | The city life is always busy and fun. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | The Jesus statue in the middle of campus has a circle around it, and if you step in the circle you will fail your next test and everyone knows you are a freshman. |
Great for these types of students | Kids who can easily balance social and school life. |
