Music Theory and Composition

Turn on the radio, and you are hearing the results of melody, harmony, and rhythm coming together to create a work of art. As a music theory and composition major, you can learn the language of music through courses in aural theory, melody, counterpoint, complex harmony, modulation, chromatics, improvisation, progressions, musical writing, instrumentation, orchestration, electronic and computer applications, studies of specific musical styles, and development of original creative ability.A bachelor's degree is generally required for work as a choir director, but no educational requirements are needed to write music. Formal training does help to develop skills, however. Courses are given in a number of settings, but settings vary greatly depending upon the type of course taught. However, each classroom is appropriate for the subject matter to be taught. For example, a voice class would certainly be taught in a practice studio, while a course in theory would likely be in a typical classroom setting. Music theory and composition majors can find career opportunities in a number of areas, including working with bands, singers, music studios, movie studios, or as an independent composer.
