Will learn a lot | I think the small class sizes will ensure maximum teacher/student interactions |
Will enjoy being here | Great location, in addition to excellent learning environment will make the perfect dream place for any student. |
Bang for the buck | I understand the financial aid benefits are second to non. In addition to one of the bests, if not the best engineering school in the nation. And for someone like me, with little hope in terms of finances, I can't look beyond Cooper Union |
Tips for prospective students | Research a lot and consider carefully your chances well in advance of your year of application in order to place yourself in a better position for admission to Cooper Union |
Great for these types of students | Dedicated, eager and willing to learn, brilliant but needy students. |

In three sentences | Can be challenging even to the smartest person. It's a small school so literally everyone knows each other after a while. The academic opportunities are endless |
Tips for prospective students | Try to be at the top of your class and do well on standardized tests Spend a lot of time on your application. Cooper's application is one of the longer ones. Make it unique and about yourself and get a lot of people to read it and give you feedback. |
Academic Rigor | Everyone has a different level of academic load that they can handle. Generally it's challenging to everybody. A couple kids flunk out every year. Even if you're a super genius. There are many opportunities to learn more and do more. So if you're the type of person who likes challenges. This is the placeGenerally most of the students here struggle in freshmen year because it takes time to adjust from high school. |
Dorm Life | The dorms are decent. Being in Manhattan it's more expensive than dorming at other schools. However the view is pretty nice. Dorms are only for first year students. So after the first year most students get an apartment nearby. Having an apartment is pretty nice and it's much less restrictive than dorms. |
Food and Dining | There's no main dining hall because Cooper is a very small school. However Cooper is in the East Village so there is a ton of good food nearby. Also the dorms are equipped with kitchens for you to cook your own meals. |
What to do for fun | New York City is amazing. Especially if it's your first time living here. There's lots to do and lots to see so it'll never be bored. |
Bang for the buck | Cooper Union used to be tuition free which is pretty great for middle class families who aren't eligible for financial aid. However the school is no longer free at the moment. That being said every student receives a half tuition scholarship. So the tuition starts at 20,000 excluding financial aid which a lot of students receive. The school will be returning to a tuition free model as soon as possible. It's a great education for a relatively good price. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | There isn't really a campus. Cooper is comprised of two academic buildings which are right next to each other. A lot of people say New York City is their campus, which is kind of true so that's pretty cool. |
Great for these types of students | Students who like to be challenged |
Clubs and Activities | Lots of clubs and things to do. |
Greek Life | There is one fraternity. No sororities. The fraternity is pretty cool. It's full of smart guys who like to occasionally have fun. |
Campus Safety | The area is generally pretty busy. So there's not many bad things that happen. However, it is still New York City. Anything can happen. Also, there a police precinct near by. |
