Great for these types of students | Stem minded. |

In three sentences | A very science-engineering school with a very tight knit community. Good professor and a pretty welcoming, if small, student body. A campus ready to grow. |
Tips for prospective students | Be prepared for a bit of geeky-ness. There's a higher concentration here and it shows. |
Academic Rigor | Professors try their best to teach what they know these students will need to succeed, be it how to write a business proposal or the basic concepts of programming. |
Dorm Life | The dorms are very high end. A little expensive, especially for a school that needs students. Smart TVs in every dorm suite are very nice. Options for suites with 3 to 6 people make the pricing a little more managable. Occasional problems with utilities should be ironed out within the year (specifically hot water and wifi). |
Food and Dining | A Starbucks located in the IST (the main school building) is very convenient for surviving those dreaded morning classes and the Wellness Center with its quickstop lunch area as well as buffet are decent enough, if somewhat limited in selection. There's also another Starbucks in the Wellness Center. The dining staff is very nice. |
What to do for fun | The Student Life Coordinator and SGA have set up a bunch of very fun events, and there are countless clubs here already. Between game nights and dances, as well as weekly meeting clubs, there is not shortage of things to do on campus. Weekly dorm events exist as well and get everyone hanging out in the common area downstairs. |
Bang for the buck | Offered the inaugural scholarship, I'm paying practically nothing to go to school here. The school has the hitches you might expect of a university just starting, but we're working toward making this a better school. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | The Innovation Science and Technology Building is the gem of the campus, its is a very beautiful building with panels that move to track the sun during the day to provide indirect sunlight to the entire second floor. |
Great for these types of students | Geeks and Nerds, or anyone with a passion for technology or engineering, we welcome you. |

In three sentences | Florida Polytechnic is a great place to get your education. Everyone on staff is extremely helpful and always willing to answer questions. Class sizes are always small and academic centered. |
Tips for prospective students | Housing fills up fast! Apply early and reserve your spot in the dorms. |
Dorm Life | Dorms are currently apartment style and very modern. |
Food and Dining | There are two separate styles of dining in the wellness center. A buffet style dinning option along with a grill and substation. No matter what you choose the food is awesome! |
What to do for fun | Being exactly in the mid point of Orlando and Tampa gives us many options of fun things to do. We are just a short 45 minute drive to downtown Orlando where you can spend the weekend at numerous theme parks including Disney World and Universal. We are also 45 minutes from Tampa which has activities such as Busch Gardens, the zoo, and the Florida Aquarium. If you are looking for something closer to the school there is numerous events always happening in downtown Lakeland. For example, First Fridays, the food truck rally, the farmers market, and zombie fest. |
Bang for the buck | Being a state university keeps this option very low budget. Which for me was important. I always wanted to go to a smaller college and most state colleges have 50,000 students but at Florida Poly they are putting a cap at 5,000 student which keeps class sizes small. So you are getting the experience of being at a smaller private college at the price of a state university. |
Great for these types of students | Florida Polytechnic is great for students interested in the stem field. |
Campus Safety | The campus is very safe. There are always officers or security guards on staff to protect the campus. The officers are very friendly and willing to escort you to your dorm room or car after a late night class or event. |

Campus Safety | Even in a possible gas leak, evacuation is required. Fast acting too. |

In three sentences | I am a future student and so far, even though I have not started my classes, I am extremely excited to attend Florida Poly. Everything, from scheduled tours to Preview night, has been extremely well organized and the admissions counselors have been very informative. I am able to see my whole course catalog online and have access to other students who are going to be attending Florida Poly as well. |
Tips for prospective students | If you're not serious about science, don't bother. |
Academic Rigor | I have not actually started my courses but I have been informed about the courses I am set up to take in my field (Nanotechnology Engineering) and the professors. I am extremely pleased with the catalog and can't wait to start. |
Dorm Life | I will not be living in a dorm the first year. However, from what I have read, the dorms look really nice (not to mention they are brand new). Almost all four plans include single bedrooms and this is a MAJOR plus. Each floor plan has their own common area, which basically means to every 3, 4 or 6 people there is a mini living room, two bathrooms, and a kitchen area. |
Food and Dining | I really can't comment on the food. July is the first time I will be able to try it! However, in Lakeland there are restaurants galore so that no matter what type of food you like, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, or American, you will be satisfied. |
What to do for fun | Currently, the main building and dorms are being built/ finished; however, next the construction team is working on the Wellness center which includes the gym, dining room, etc. Also, since this is a new school the students are planning to start numerous clubs that will allow for fun times. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | New school. We're making the traditions! |
Great for these types of students | This is a STEM school so if you're really serious about science then it'd be a good school for you. |
Campus Safety | I've heard that they are going to have their own police force and students will have access to help buttons all across the school. If you're in need then you can press the button and someone will be there for you. |

Tips for prospective students | Be ready to study tech. Make sure that you really enjoy it, because there aren't any majors that are unrelated to STEM for you to switch into should you change your mind. Also remember that FL Poly isn't accredited yet, so the FAFSA is a no-go, but they say that you can send a copy to them and they'll see what they can do. Bright Futures will be you're friend if you are a Florida resident, because they can and will accept that. |
Academic Rigor | The classes certainly seem like they will be difficult, but also exciting! It's very easy to reach your professors since all of their offices are on the second floor of the main building, which is great when you want to ask for help. |
Dorm Life | The dorms look great! I'll be signing up for a 4 person dorm, where everyone gets their own room and there are 2 bathrooms, which is a huge plus. |
Food and Dining | There is a huge array of dining opportunities outside of the university, and there is a Publix nearby. |
Bang for the buck | Besides being a state school, I'm getting a scholarship for $7000/year. If you keep up decent grades, you're sure to get a great scholarship heading your way, along with if you qualify for Bright Futures here in Florida. |

In three sentences | Florida Polytechnic University is a unique university whose class building was designed by world-renown architect Dr. Santiago Calatrava. This is a university that offers many degrees that help prepare the students for the careers needed today. Florida Poly is the right university for students who want to learn in classrooms with small student-to-teacher ratios and who want one-on-one time with their professors. |
Tips for prospective students | Students coming into Florida Poly should have a good background in math and science preferably Precalculus and or Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry. Students coming in should have a mindset to not procrastinate. They should also come ready and willing to learn. |
Academic Rigor | Florida Polytechnic University's academic rigor is pretty strong. The classes are not just regular classes that don't require you to do anything except show up; the classes are fast-paced and contain a medium to large homework load. |
Dorm Life | The Student Residence Halls are very nice. The students have a washer and drier in each of their three/four bedroom suites. They have ping-pong and billiards tables on the first floor along with a kitchen and small workout facility. |
Food and Dining | The food at Florida Polytechnic University is amazing. The cooks there are incredibly talented and kind. They make their own food there and the food is very high quality. The burgers actually taste like real beef, the pizza is better than any restaurant that I have been to, and the vegetarian food there is healthy and delicious. |
What to do for fun | There are many things to do depending on what an individual considers fun. There are students playing soccer and ultimate frisby in the open grass on their off time. Different unofficial clubs have meetings usually once to twice a week and new clubs are constantly being made. Paintball is an option for fun that some students have been talking about going off campus to play. |
Bang for the buck | Florida Poly has some expensive food, but it is very delicious and most of it is actually healthy. However, if one wishes to save money instead of paying for food at Florida Poly everyday, he or she should bring food from home or buy groceries from a Publix nearby and make his or her own food to take to school. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | None that I know of. |
Great for these types of students | These are the students that would fit best at this school: computer savys, science, technology, engineering, and math lovers. |

Greek Life | None |

In three sentences | A great experience. The school has all new, state of the art technology and lab equipment. Cirriculum is very hands on and the school in general is small which creates a more personal experience in classes. |
Tips for prospective students | Set your study habits ahead of time. Classes aren't hard, per se, but it is a rigorous program and can be a little overwhelming if you don't have good time management and study skills. There are a lot of help opportunities on campus though and professors are always willing to help out so don't let that freak you out. |
Academic Rigor | Classes are rigorous, the professors move at a steady pace though so as not to lose anyone. |
Dorm Life | Dorms are brand new and very luxurious. Each suite comes with a flat screen tv, a full sized fridge, living room furniture, kitchen high top table, a microwave, and their own washer/dryer set. Depending on what the student signed up for they get their own bedroom. Living and sleeping space is much bigger than what I expected a dorm to be. Bathrooms have a standard shower. |
Food and Dining | There's a few different options for food. A sub place, a grill, then a buffet/cafeteria style. The food is actually really tasty and there are a lot of options in the cafeteria area. Meal options change daily, offering a lot of variety for a lot of different types of eaters. |
What to do for fun | There's a common area in the dorms with a pool table, five tvs, a ping pong table. There's always something going on. |
Bang for the buck | Dorms are expensive but very much worth it for what you're getting. Although the food is very good it is a little pricey. |
Great for these types of students | Those who want a new experience and want to be part of an innovative future. |
Campus Safety | School has police officers and a security group. They make their rounds on campus all the time. There's a lot of emergency poles too. |

In three sentences | Florida Polytechnic is a great choice for those who are wanting to go into any career field involving STEM research. Not only does this new school offer state of the art facilities for the classes and research, but it is also located in a central part of Florida where there are many different attractions which draw people from all around the state. Personally I love being a part of this brand new college and being able to influence the future of the university. |
Tips for prospective students | I would suggest that students who live far away from the campus, look for housing near or on campus. It would be very difficult traveling to Florida Poly everyday for class if you did not live close. |
Academic Rigor | The university offers many advanced classes that require a great deal of work. |
Dorm Life | Given that the dorms are brand new, the dorms are very luxurious. The dorms are apartment style and offer a great deal of privacy and space for each resident. |
Food and Dining | The dining facility is brand new as well. Again, the facility is very nice and a large variety of food is offered from healthy sandwiches to loaded tacos on Wednesday. |
What to do for fun | The university is located in central Florida within in 30 minutes from several attractions like Disney World, the Gulf Coast beaches, Downtown Tampa, Busch Gardens, Downtown Orlando and many more. |
