University of San Francisco
Founded by Jesuits in the mid-nineteenth century, the University of San Francisco is a private Catholic university and the first university established in the city. The 55-acre urban campus located near Golden Gate Park is home to 49 academic majors as well as an Honors College. As part of the USF core curriculum, all students are required to take classes in six academic fields of study, including in a Theology and Religious Studies course, however, students are not required to attend a weekly church service. Beyond the classroom, USF provides numerous opportunities for service including Arrupe Immersion trips that enable students to live and work in economically marginalized communities. USF also maintains partnerships with several schools abroad, including in El Salvador, Italy, Japan, and Finland.
