Devoting your life to education is both admirable and rewarding. Choosing to major in special education and work with special needs students is even more of a challenge, but it's a career that can be extraordinarily gratifying. As a special education and teaching major, you learn how best to teach students who have learning, communication, emotional, behavioral, physical, and developmental disabilities and disorders. Programs typically focus on courses that prepare individuals to provide services to children or adults. Topics may include topics like the diagnosis of learning disabilities, individual education plan (IEP) development, supervising, counseling, teaching students with special needs, and special education law. You'll also receive instruction typical for all education majors in classes like classroom management, educational psychology, and childhood development. Most programs require students to complete a student teaching program at some point during their senior year. This allows you to function as a classroom teacher for several months and valuable experience in the field while being supervised by a licensed professional. Special education and teaching majors typically work in schools. However, pursuing a graduate degree may open up additional opportunities in educational administration or school district leadership.
