Students studying

Photography

In today's image-driven culture, capturing moments from behind a camera can lead you almost anywhere: lighting, styling, retouching, editing, designing, experimenting, manipulating, processing, and teaching. The photography major will prepare you to navigate the range of commercial and fine art photography and be able to move between digital tools and classic technique. Photography majors focus on the principles and techniques of communicating information, ideas, moods, and feelings through the creation of images on photographic film, plates, and digital images. As a photography major, you will begin your studies learning basic design and drawing while working with a wide range of media and techniques as you explore two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and time-based projects. You will receive instruction on camera equipment, operation, maintenance, film and plate developing, light and composition, films and printing media, color and special effects, photographic art, photographic history, and the use of computer applications to record or enhance images. Some schools give students the opportunity to focus their studies through concentrations or specializations within the photography major, such as marketing and advertising or art and design. This may prepare students to become professional photographic artists. Students graduate prepared for careers as photographers, graphic designers, or filmmakers.
