University of Rochester
The University of Rochester is private, research university highly ranked in the National Universities list by U.S. News & World Report. It operates under the mission "Learn, Discover, Heal, Create—and Make the World Ever Better" and students can charter their own paths to do that since their are no required general education courses. The University of Rochester is home to The Institute of Optics, which was founded in 1929 and was the first educational program devoted to optics in the US. Also calling U of R home is Open Letter, a nonprofit literary translation press, the Memorial Art Gallery featuring works from antiquity to contemporary, and the C.E.K. Mees Observatory.
