Tips for prospective students | #1) If you plan on transferring to a major university take general courses at GCC they will transfer almost anywhere! #2) Don't wait to enroll, as soon as your financial aid clears you can charge your books to your account (as a side note: none of my books were more than $150, one was $14.00. Amazing!!) #3) Look into Study abroad they have a partnership with the U of Wisconsin, and you can travel to Scotland! |
Academic Rigor | Academic Rigor depends on what type of classes you are taking. You can take honors classes for more rigor. I am currently taking Honors Psychology, which is challenging but very flexible as well. The book for the class helps you to learn and retain the information. |
Dorm Life | Right by the campus, The dorms are quiet and nice. Highlights include: -Basic cable access per suite and in the common areas. -Free internet and wireless internet access. -Laundry room on-site. -Individually assigned mailboxes on-site. -Free parking. -4 person semi-private suites, with furnished bedroom and dining space. Includes extra-long twin bed, desk/chair, clothes bureau, closet space, window coverings, dining table, and four chairs. -Full kitchen per suite. Includes a full size four burner stove top/oven, 16 cubic foot refrigerator, kitchen sink, and cabinet space. -Full bath space per suite. -Shared vanity space per room. Includes a large mirror, sink, and cabinet space. There is a fire pit out front as well for midnight bonfires and more! |
Food and Dining | There is a snack place on campus, but no major dining. However because of GCC's location you can easily go into town to grab a bite. |
What to do for fun | Every Wednesday when the weather is fair there is a farmers market for free local grown food. There are dances, and many sports teams. Also you can go into town to watch a movie or dine with a friend. The real fun, however, starts in the winter. There are a number of winter sports, and completions. Upper Michigan get's a lot of snow, which is Ideal for the skiing and snowboard junkie! |
Bang for the buck | Gogebic is extraordinarily affordable. Classes for those in town cost $102 per credit. You're looking at a no more than $15,000 a year, all costs included. |

In three sentences | Teachers are very hands on and approachable. Class sizes are small so lots of one on one time with teachers. Houghton campus is new construction and very up to date. |
Tips for prospective students | Good choice to start out at, much cheaper than a university and education is just as good. |
Academic Rigor | The academics are good. The nursing program is challenging but at the same time not impossible. You are pushed to do good work. |
Dorm Life | I don't live in the dorms so I can't rate the dorms. |
Food and Dining | I don't attend the main campus so I can't rate the food and dining. |

In three sentences | This school is a hidden gem in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It offers a myriad of courses at an affordable rate and at the same time provides a great education. I would recommend it for people in and outside Michigan. |
Tips for prospective students | Be prepared for tough winters, but at the same time it's winter that offers many fun opportunities since the school has its own ski hill. The local area is great for outdoor activities and cost of living is low with many amenities and shopping not far away. Go there with an open mind and plan a trip to Lake Superior located just 12 miles from campus. |
Academic Rigor | This is a community college but it is a school that will challenge you in many ways! From the nursing profession to graphic arts and computer-aided drawing to ski hill management, the school provides a hands-on opportunity to gain new skills and get a great education! |
Dorm Life | Many of the dorms are new and amenities are plentiful for the amount of students attending. It's also very affordable! Recommend on-campus living to any student who decides to go to Gogebic Community College! |
Food and Dining | The local area is more than the fast food and meat and potatoes diners you can come across in many college cities. Ironwood and the Gogebic County area offer a wide variety of eating establishments. Make sure you try a Yooper pasty -- pronounced pass-tee and many of the other restaurants. There's also plenty of areas to shop for food to include a large Wal-Mart grocery store, a pair of Super One grocery stores and smaller convenience shops. If you are a college student on a budget, I think getting $5 pizzas at one restaurant is a pretty good deal. |
What to do for fun | In the spring, summer and fall, there are a plethora of hiking trails and scenic areas to visit. Right behind the school is Mount Zion which provides a great view of the Porcupine Mountain range. Additionally, the largest of the Great Lakes is only 12 miles away and people can visit the rocky shores of Lake Superior and all its grandness at Little Girl's Point for example. Also, with a short road trip, students can go to Duluth, Minn., or hit several of the bigger cities in Wisconsin. In winter, there are several ski hills in the area where snowboarding, skiing and innertubing are fun activities. There's also an abundance of hunting and fishing opportunities around the area. |
Bang for the buck | By far the cost of tuition and everything else for GCC for the education you receive is a deal and then some! For all the trade training opportunities as well as transferable credit programs that are great at many universities. The options seem limitless with this school. |
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus | It's probably one of the only schools in the Upper Midwest, much less the United States, where you could finish classes for the day and go out to the parking lot, grab your snowboard, and hit the slopes in the span of a few minutes! |
Great for these types of students | The school is great of outdoor lovers and has one of the best nursing programs in Michigan. My mother graduated from the GCC nursing program and spent 30 years in the profession where she recently retired. It's also a great place for anyone looking for a fresh start. The local area offers that small town atmosphere where people take care of each other. |
Clubs and Activities | There are many, many campus activities that are run by the students to include intramural sports, art clubs, dances and more. Plus, if you have a great idea for an activity, you can often take it to fruition. |
Greek Life | There are no Greek life chapters at GCC, but not surprising as it is a community college. There are honors society possibilities there though! |
Campus Safety | Another nice part about this school, it's location, and what it offers is its safety. Ironwood is a low-crime city and a person can feel safe in and around campus. Additionally, the school staff takes the safety of the students very seriously and is always upgrading its facilities to make it a great place to go to school. |
The teachers are flexible and for the student not interested in the hustle and bustle of the city Gogebic is a great place to study. It is located in Ironwood, Michigan a charming little town in the Upper Peninsula.
