What are Asian Pacific Islander Scholarships?

While relatively small in landmass, the Pacific Islands near Asia are home to millions of people and a multitude of rich cultures. In colleges and universities across the United States, there are a wide range of scholarships available exclusively to prospective students of Asian and/or Pacific Islander descent. Whether you are an international applicant or a long-time resident, these scholarships can help you take the next step and finance your education.

Available through both private and public institutions (including schools, third-party organizations, and foundations), Asian Pacific Islander scholarships present financial awards to applicants to help them pay for college tuition and other expenses. These scholarships vary considerably in terms of amount awarded and criteria for submission. Further, some are awarded to the more general group of those with Asian descent, while others are reserved for members of the smaller Pacific Islander group, so it’s important to do your research before applying. On this page, we’ll help you get started.

How Do I Qualify for Asian Pacific Islander Scholarships?

Wondering whether you qualify for an Asian Pacific Islander scholarship? If you or your parents come from an island nation near Asia or South Asia, the answer is most likely yes. The most inclusive scholarships are offered to both Pacific Islanders and Asians, so those from China, Korea, Japan, and Indonesia qualify. The more exclusive ones may be available only Pacific Islanders: Fijians, Samoans, Native Hawaiians, Chamorros, Palauans, and Tongans. Check each scholarship before starting your application, and be ready to prepare some form of proof of descent—such as a birth certificate, Certificate of Indian Blood from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or foreign paperwork.

The next thing you’ll want to check is the entire set of requirements for each scholarship you’re considering. Many Asian Pacific Islander scholarships require applicants to submit an essay (or several), maintain a certain GPA, or submit letters of recommendation. It’s important to give yourself enough time before the scholarship deadline to assemble these extra materials.

Why Are Asian Pacific Islander Scholarships Important?

Asian Pacific Islander scholarships provide life-changing opportunities to a wide group of people. The residents of Asia and the peoples of the Pacific Islands include an incredibly rich array of unique cultures. The same cultures and demographic groups do not always possess the same means to make college in the United States a reality, which is why Asian Pacific Islander scholarships are so helpful. In turn, prospective students from Asia and the Pacific Island cultures contribute immensely to college environments with unique perspectives, personalities, and cultural heritages. It’s a win-win for the students, their families, and everyone around them.
