BAAS Postgraduate Short-Term Travel Awards
British Association for American Studies
Applications are invited from persons normally resident in the UK, and from scholars currently working at, or registered as postgraduates at, UK universities and institutions of higher education. All applicants should be aware that they may only apply to ONE of the categories: the Postgraduate OR the ECR OR the Founders’ Awards. The Postgraduate STAs cater for MA (or MPhil, MLitt or even MSC depending on the type of research) and Ph.D candidates registered at a UK institution who wish to travel to the United States to present a paper at a conference, or do a specific piece of research fieldwork, i.e. at a library, archive, and or university. The ECR awards may be employed for the same purposes as the Postgraduate awards. BAAS uses the AHRC definition of “early career”: “an individual who is within eight years of the award of their PhD or equivalent professional training, or an individual who is within six years of their first academic appointment. These durations exclude any period of career break, e.g. for family care or health reasons. The ‘first academic appointment’ is defined as the first paid contract of employment, either full-time or part-time, which lists research and/or teaching as the primary functions.” The Founders’ Awards are designed for established academics who are either tenured, on long contacts, or who have been working within academia for a considerable period of time. There is no upper limit to qualification, i.e. applicants beyond retirement who have a research project they are conducting are perfectly entitled to apply for a Founders’ STA.
