Your FSA ID: Create It Now (for Student Aid)

Financial aid is often awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning that the earlier you submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the better your chances of receiving financial assistance.

Many federal, state, and institutional aid programs have limited funds, and these resources can run out as more students apply. So submitting your FAFSA as soon as it opens increases the likelihood of qualifying for grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and federal student loans.

An initial hurdle many students experience when filling out the FAFSA is creating their FSA ID. For that reason, you should get your FSA ID now.

We’ll tell you what you need to create your FSA ID and ask questions you’re probably wondering next.

What is an FSA ID?

The FSA ID is a username and password that allows you to access U.S. Department of Education systems and is required to complete and sign the FAFSA form online.

What you need to create an FSA ID

  • Social Security Number (SSN): Make sure it matches your records.
  • Email Address and Mobile Number: These must be unique to each user. If you are dependent, both you and your parent need a unique one.
  • Personal Information: Full name, date of birth, and address.
  • Challenge Questions: Choose questions that are memorable for you but hard for others to guess.

How to create an FSA ID

Follow these updated steps to set up an FSA ID before the FAFSA opens. You can also watch this helpful video that walks you through it.

  1. Begin creating your account: Visit studentaid.gov and click on “Create Account.”
  2. Enter personal information: Provide your full name, Social Security Number (SSN), date of birth, and contact information. Make sure your information matches what is on your Social Security card.

You need a verified email address or mobile phone number. This will help you retrieve your FSA ID if you forget it. But it's best not to use your high school email because you'll need access to it once you graduate from high school.

Each FSA ID must be tied to a unique email address and phone number. The new version of the FAFSA will not allow students and parents to use the same contact details or FSA ID once created.

  1. Set up a username and password: Choose a username and password.
  2. Answer security questions and complete verification: Select challenge questions and answers that only you know. You will also set up two-step verification, adding an extra security layer to your account.
  3. Review and submit: After entering all the required information, review what you have shared. Once you know it’s correct, submit your FSA ID creation form.
  4. Wait for verification: You may need to wait for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to verify your information, which can take 1-3 days. Once verified, your FSA ID is ready to use.

How long does it take to create an FSA ID?

Submitting your information usually takes 10 minutes or less. However, if the SSA needs to verify your information, it may take a few days before you can use your FSA ID.

Resources to help with your FSA ID & FAFSA account

  • The Federal Student Aid website: Visit StudentAid.gov for a detailed guide on creating an FSA ID. There, you’ll find videos and step-by-step instructions.
  • Federal Student Aid customer support: You can contact Federal Student Aid support through their website or helpline.
  • School counselors: Your school’s counselors can provide guidance and help with any questions you have about setting up your FSA ID and completing the FAFSA.

You can complete your FAFSA form quickly once your FSA ID is ready and the application opens. Remember, both you and your parent (if you are a dependent) will need their own FSA IDs to sign and submit the FAFSA form online.
