The U.S. military academies
The Department of Defense maintains five military academies to prepare cadets for an officer appointment in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Merchant Marine. Here, they are in no particular order.

What is a U.S. military academy like?
The lifestyle at each academy is very rigorous. Usually, only individuals who are firmly committed to a life in the military are motivated to complete such a strenuous academic experience. Cadets can pursue undergraduate degrees in many areas of study while training to become leaders and officers within their respective branches of the U.S. military.
In addition, cadets or midshipmen at these academies also receive extensive physical and leadership training, participate in extracurricular activities, and have sports opportunities.
How to apply to a U.S. military academy
The application process begins in the spring of your junior year.
We did not know this information when my son was interested in applying to the Naval Academy. We began our research at the beginning of his senior year, and it was too late to start the application process. A fellow NJROTC student began preparing early to apply to the Air Force Academy by researching its requirements, resulting in an appointment to the academy after graduation.
Request a Pre-Candidate Questionnaire
You should call or write to each academy at the end of April of your junior year and request a Pre-Candidate Questionnaire. The brief pre-application is easy to complete. But you must complete this form in order to receive a formal application.
Complete your official Candidate Application
The official Candidate Application consists of several components, including the application, a physical aptitude test, a personality test, a personal statement, recommendations, and various printed materials. You should fill out and return as many of the application materials as soon as possible. You may send in the various components of your application separately.
Each academy will set up an admissions file on you as soon as they receive part or all of your application. You could be notified as early as November of your senior year of your admittance, although the normal date for notification is after mid-April.
You Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board
You must promptly arrange your DODMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board) Physical if you expect to be admitted on schedule. Many potential candidates have been denied admission because their physical was not completed on time.
Completing the DODMERB Physical is essential before admission can be granted. Schedule your physical as soon as you get your application. Keep in constant contact with the Admissions Board of the Academies to which you are applying to determine if there are delays in the receipt of application materials.
When you start your senior year, you should write letters to both your representative in the House of Representatives and California Senators requesting a nomination to each academy to which you are applying. Most nominations are given by the representative in your area. They will schedule you for an interview as soon as they receive your letter of request. Failure to schedule an interview can cost you your chance for admission.
Who gets into U.S. military academies?
Successful appointment to an academy is based on the completion of your application, your physical, and a receipt of your nomination. Candidates in the top 10% of their class, with strong SAT scores and who have demonstrated leadership in school or community activities, are the strongest candidates for admission.
Admission to the academies is extremely competitive, and only excellent students who have demonstrated superior leadership skills are granted admittance.
A typical profile of a successful applicant would show a student with outstanding grades in the school's most difficult courses, who has scored very well on the SAT, and who has been involved in school sports, student government, Boy Scouts, and community-based organizations.
Which military academy is the best for you?
A service academy serves a broader mission and is designed to cultivate strength of body, character, and intellect. Academy students are trained to take on demanding and dangerous leadership roles that require a combination of athleticism, wits, courage, and integrity.
The required core curriculum at service academies is more comprehensive than at other colleges. It includes a wide range of subjects that are especially relevant to the stressful and technical careers students are likely to pursue after graduation.
Academy students are expected to study chemistry, engineering, history, law, math, physics, philosophy, and psychology regardless of their major. Playing sports throughout your time at the academy, such as Air Force Academy football and basketball, is encouraged.
One of the best ways for prospective students to assess whether they would excel at an academy is to visit the campus or participate in an immersive summer program that previews the academy experience.
Summer programs, which also require applications, are available on the websites of the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, the Naval Academy, and West Point.
The cost to attend a U.S. military academy
If accepted to a military academy, there is no cost to you. Financially, the service academies are undoubtedly an incredible deal. Tuition, books, room and board, medical, and dental care are fully paid for all four years. Additionally, you receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses and pay for miscellaneous supplies.
Military academies vs. traditional civilian colleges
As a student at one of the five military service academies, you will experience a unique and challenging college experience quite different from what you might find at other colleges or universities.
Your education will concentrate on leadership and military training, equipping you for a career as an officer in a branch of the U.S. military. As a result, your college experience will be deeply rooted in military traditions, with a strong focus on discipline, honor, and teamwork.
During your time at an academy, you will undergo extensive physical training, including rigorous exercise routines and military drills. You will also have numerous opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities and sports.
"The main difference you'll find at the Naval Academy and at the other service academies is that you are being developed as a leader, not just getting trained academically," says Jeff Webb when speaking to U.S. News. He is a former Navy SEAL officer who is now president and CEO of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation.
Civilian colleges provide a more traditional college experience, offering a broader range of academic programs. While some colleges have military affiliations or ROTC programs, most do not emphasize military training and leadership development as service academies do. The focus will be primarily on your academic studies rather than military training, giving you more freedom and flexibility in your schedule and daily routine.

The student experience at a U.S. military academy
Cadets at a military service academy undergo a rigorous and demanding four-year program that prepares them for leadership roles in the military. What happens after you graduate from an academy?
Graduates of the service academies receive a commission as an officer in the U.S. Armed Forces and are obligated to serve for a minimum of five years. Upon completing their service commitment, graduates are free to pursue careers in the military or civilian world.
Many service academy graduates go on to have successful careers in the military and retire after years of service. Others choose to leave the military after their service commitment is up and pursue civilian careers, often at high levels of leadership. In the civilian world, military academy graduates have become successful business leaders, politicians, and more.
