How to Stay Safe During Parties and College Events

As much fun as living on campus is, here are a few rules to keep you safe if you venture out on a weekend. Knowing yourself, the people around you and your limits will be vital when you're in a new environment. It's always better to be overcautious than end up in a scary situation.

Regardless of whether you drink, guard your cup. It’s important to never let your cup out of your sight. Even if you’re having a glass of soda or water, it’s possible someone could slip a roofie into your cup if you leave it unattended. Never set your drink down to go to the bathroom or talk to a friend. Always keep your cup with you, even if it means bringing it in the bathroom.

Go out with at least one friend (or two, or three). It’s safer to go out in numbers. This way, if you’re in an uncomfortable situation, having a friend to help you out of it is crucial. You should watch out for one another and try to walk home in pairs. Never walk alone at night, ever!

You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. There’s no need to prove how cool or tough you are. It’s dangerous so don’t succumb to pressure. Know your limits because it’s okay to say no to something you don’t want to do. No one can take away your agency or sense of self.

Be aware of your surroundings. Whether you’re at a party or campus event, always take note of who is around you. If a situation is becoming hostile (March Madness riots are one example) get out as soon as possible. You don’t want to be caught up in a party that’s spiraling out of control.

Know how to get home. If possible, leave with the same people who walked in the door with you. Getting home is easy with apps like Uber and Lyft. If you're on campus, there's likely a safety escort that you can call, which is free. Lastly, this goes without saying, but never drink and drive. Lives are on the line and police are constantly on the prowl at night.
