What to Wear to a College Interview

As a recent college graduate, I find that college interviews resemble job interviews in several ways. Like job interviews, I encourage high school students to prepare by researching the college beforehand. This preparation process includes choosing an appropriate outfit for the interview.

In this article, we will go over what you should and should not wear for a college interview.

Which colleges require interviews?

To preface, many colleges do not include an interview portion in their admissions process. Colleges conducting interviews are usually highly selective colleges or Ivy League schools. Some colleges, like Stanford and Pomona, list the interview section as optional or recommended.

Regardless, I highly recommend participating in the interview process, as this is an opportunity that allows you to demonstrate your personality and genuine interest in the college.

If this situation does apply to you, these tips can still be valuable. At some point in your college journey, you are bound to be in a professional setting, whether it is for an on-campus organization event, internship interview, or career fair.

Importance of dressing professionally

Ever heard of the phrase “dress to impress?" Well, it is true, especially in a professional setting. By putting effort into your appearance, you demonstrate to your interviewer that you care to look presentable and want to make a good impression.

Furthermore, dressing up can help boost your confidence level during your interview. All in all, it does not hurt to dress professionally. I would even say it is safe to dress a little more professionally than casually.

College interview attire recommendations

The general guideline for a college interview attire is to opt for a business casual look. Business casual clothing consists of button-up shirts, slacks, polo shirts, and khakis. Women can also wear skirts and dresses extending to the knee level. For men, ties are optional.

If you feel like your outfit is plain, consider adding a blazer, a belt, and/or simple jewelry. When in doubt, stick to cool or neutral colors like navy, brown, beige, gray, white, and black. For men, the dress shoes will typically be loafers and oxfords, while women can choose between flats and low heels. If you need visual inspiration, I recommend looking on social media like Pinterest!

What to avoid wearing

Avoid any clothing that is not business casual, such as ripped jeans, cropped tops, denim shorts, excessively revealing clothing, open-toed shoes, and athletic clothing.

Additionally, I strongly advise against finding an outfit the night before. We are all prone to procrastinating; however, it can add to the stress and be time-consuming. Beyond your attire, avoid messy, tangled hair and chapped lips (especially since you will be talking a lot). These things can pose as a distraction for you unconsciously.

Clothing tips for virtual interviews

Since the pandemic, colleges have continued to offer online interviews as they are more convenient for both parties. In this case, you have more flexibility, but try to wear professional attire fully. When you look good, you feel good. It is as simple as that. Through your laptop camera, double-check your outfit, ensure proper lighting in your area, and make sure your background is free from distractions.

Final interview outfit checklist

Once you have chosen your outfit, I recommend trying it on several days in advance to ensure everything meets your standards. I would even go as far as wearing your dress shoes if you do not wear them often. Even if you will be seated for your interview, the walk on campus can be long. Also, consider bringing a stain remover pen with you in case of an accident.

Overall, you want your appearance to be presentable for your college interview as this will form the interviewer’s first impression of you. Remember to stay true to yourself; the purpose of the interview is to get to know you both as a student and an individual.

I wish you the best of luck with your interview!
